Luckily I was busy yesterday as any 456 starting with a 2 interests me.
Did not realise the true nature of the "auction" though

This isn't the same black one that one of the large auction houses had as a classified sale last year is it? It got mentioned on here. I don't recall that one being a cat car mind.23k is a little as they get apart from the 17k car on PH a good few years back, but different times etc.

Yeah that's a different car. That one was a black overspray. Tan interior. And manual from memory. A real shocker and... Whilst you'd think they'd just move it on privately.. Even for parts... That said auction house keeps trying to flog that dead horse, which does nothing for their reputation.

Sadly, having inspected the service records and seeing how they are totally at odds with claimed condition of car... It makes you realise all other cars from that auction house may also be grossly misrepresented.

It was reading the story of the £17,000 one on PH that ignited my fire but never saw one again that cheap but bought mine for £25,000 with full history and needing nothing doing to it but that was in 2012.
I worked out that you could easily spend £10,000 on one back then from seeing the invoices with my car the biggest being £13,000 and she hadn't done 25,000 miles.
You have to have your eyes open but Iain Tyrell holds them in high regard.

One of the collecting cars 456s looked ok but squirrelled away in the paperwork was a bill for £11k for engine work. Its the risk of that sort of thing that rather puts me off.
I saw a 612 that had been owned by a local GP I knew come up to but there were one or two bills around the £9k range that again is a little more than I can tolerate. One day maybe

Not necessarily. There are fees on top and the way collecting cars works, it’s down to the seller and buyer to now conclude a private sale. This car has been through before and obviously that “sale” didn’t happen.

Having said that, the price seems keen and perhaps it is a bargain of sorts.
That can't be right. If you place a winning bid the car is yours, if that's not the case no one would use the site.

It's not the same a traditional auction. Essentially the site gets its fees no matter what but on selling, the buyer and seller are electronically introduced to conclude a sale however as it is distance selling, it is not binding and so either party can decide not to conclude. It would have cost both fees for the effort but that's all.

And it's a Modificato version, which is the one to have. By then they'd fixed the window problem, and the rear shocks. Still a very expensive ownership prospect though. Mine remains by far and away the most expensive car to run of all that I've had. Bills of £5-£10k came thick and fast (though mine was an earlier model, not an M, and I ran it as a commuting/daily car for two years rather than as a weekend treat). Buyer beware!

This is exactly what worries me although it would get far less use than you put it to. Shocks can be rebuilt more economically and I'd hope there is a fix for the windows by now, anyone know if that's true?

I increasingly think how much I enjoy the GTS MC. I've invested a lot in it, and not afraid to use it, and it's all the better for it.
This forum is a really great resource to keep these cars running, and what a great bunch of people are on here.

As the buyer of the £17k PH 456 I can honestly say that, in my experience at least, they are reliable cars and parts If needed can normally be sourced at more competitive prices than main dealers. I did about 10k in mine over 6 years and it never let me down, apart from when taking it to a potential buyer and the alternator packed up. But as has been mentioned the window closure can be a pain and although it can be adjusted it could be pricey to get 100pc so do check this if you are looking at one. From memory I think the new door seals were the most expensive thing I bought at over £400 per side.... but cambelt changes are relatively painless. Definitely a special car for the money they are fetching, even now....

The window problem as far as I recall affected the first 12 months or so of RHD cars. There were even rumours some were sent back to Italy, sat in the car park at Maranello for a bit then shipped back again, leaving the dealers to sort them out.

I had a 1997 GTA for about 12k miles and 7 years with no window issues. The only bits that failed were Bilstein shocks (rebuilt by Bilstein U.K.), Bosch alternator and Jaguar seat potentiometer. The Italian bits were spot on.

I liked the handling of the GTA with its transaxle and the Ricardo auto box which made it great for touring. I'm sure it would have been more of an event driving a manual version though. I didn't fancy that at the time after suffering with a dodgy knee, and bought it for holidays while the kids were tiny, so the auto suited our needs and seemed a grown up choice.

Pros - V12 engine, looks (especially rear), interior quality, snazzy rear spoiler, noise over 4500rpm, big fuel tank, rear kiddy seats.
Cons - felt like a big car, ate rear tyres for breakfast, sold in 2014 for £28k

I'm still glad I ticked the V12 box though and survived.

The most handsome F car of the period for me. How long did rear tyres last? Was used to 6k miles on (low-ish) powered 911 3.2 Carrera. The QP is between 6 and 10k for me.

Hard to recall - it was fewer than the Atlantique before it and 6k miles was pretty normal for that, so maybe 4-5k?
