Doing my first set of variators to do on a 07 QP 4.2 wet sump and the new one is quite different to the failed original.image.jpg

How many kms Phil?

My Maser indie says the QP and GT variators tend to go around the 75,000km mark on the clock.

Working with a Master Tech Peter.
The front cam caps have been modified with the non return valves to stop the oil draining away.

Are all 07 QPs going to have this problem when they reach 70K km/43K miles? I occasaionaly get the can o' nails on start up especially when the temperature is cold. I'm on 43.5K ...gulp...
Seems like another design fault which we are paying through the nose for.

philw696,

Is all that is required to cure the 2 second can of nails noise, to instal the modified check valve, rather than replacing the variators themselves or solenoids?

The cost of doing the modification as a preventative measure seems to be coming down (even at main dealers) and independents are now doing them. My plan is to wait until the usual cam cover gasket leaks require doing and then the extra labour is fairly limited.

Surprised as this is the most common fault on this engine...tend to weep at the rear bulkhead.

+1 if this is the fix then it is far better than the the £5k (ish) option from UK main dealers.

Hmmm... I've just had my cam cover and timing cover gaskets done.

Any clues on the cost to replace the modified check valve?

Main dealer should be under £3,000 if it's just the modified check valve being installed and not replacing variators etc. It's apparently a 20 hour job so an Independent should be around half that, although I don't know anyone who's had it done independently yet.

Didn't know the 4.2 engines had this. The first picture on this thread, very similar to the ones fitted to the 968 engines. Oil driven to allow the valve timings on the input cam to change, hence the rush you get above 4000rpm. With the Porsche, the chain can stretch over time and the chain guides wear. I seem to recall they are over a £1000 a shot and it they break (separate chain driven by the output cam), then you can add the cost of an engine rebuild too.

Whether it's a design flaw, I don't know, but it's my understanding that manufacturers like Porsche, Maserati, Ferrari and pushing the envelope and are usually the first to introduce innovations to drag as must performance and characteristics as possible.

We just pay the price when the cars get older.

From what I understand, this problem only affects late 2008 / early 2009 cars after which the modified part was fitted. If you have an extended warranty, if should be covered

The ones we are doing are 4.2 but the 4.7 is only a stroked 4.2.

Larger bore too, not just stroked.
I looked into the differences recently to see if just a crank could be used to turn a 4.2 into a 4.7....unfortunately not!
