I've got a mate who works in the power industry , he said he read something last week about proposals to top up the national grid during peak periods with energy stored in thousands of battery packs connected to the grid
Guess where those battery packs are
:D

It isn’t a proposal, there are already quite a lot of grid support arrays dotted about the place with more proposals for aggregating existing UPS systems etc.

When I was in the nuclear industry at Berkeley (Gloucestershire, not USA) I met one chap who was at Aldermaston and assured me they had a perpetual motion machine there. Worked by a combination of magnets and flywheels, but they had no way of controlling it, it always wound itself up and destroyed itself, couldn't slow the motion down.

Of course I don't believe it, but this guy deffo was from Aldermaston and as I was, totally cleared to PV level (at the time it was PV not DV as it is now) and was a nailed-on boffin judging by his trousers and the leather patches on his jacket elbows.

I countered by saying if it wound itself up and broke the motion is not perpetual so he backed down.

I think you missed my point, these grid support arrays are in cars connected to the grid charging up , they're proposing to take power out at peak times , I suppose it cant be much because you'd be pretty ****** off if you'd had your car on charge overnight and it was on 30% so somebody can boil their kettle at 7:30am

When I was at Bournemouth, we were approached by a company to sell our electricity to the grid when there's a power cut. The salesman gave a 30mins power point presentation to the airport management saying how much the airport would make over cost of diesel to much nodding. I piped up that in the event of a power cut we'd be powering our airport not the grid.

There was a letter to the motoring page in a national paper today: Why don't electric cars have small fans on them attached to turbines so they can generate more electricity when travelling at speed.

sigh
