Matt,
These 4 wheel ailignment machines are great but must be used properly.
An obvious point is they should check that the rims are not damaged before fitting the reflectors (if that's their name). You can do that and I'm sure your wheels are perfect.
It's also good practice to recheck the final readings. Ask them for to roll the car off and on the machine after the adjustments and give you a second set of final readings. Expect the 2 sets to be different but both within tolerance.

Thanks guys, all good stuff. I have decided to have all 4 tyres replaced, so I might as well trash what I have for a few months....ie Le Mans. The rears have 3mm of tread, which will cover me for Le Mans, and the fronts are bad, but nothing like down to the wadding or anything.

The car shows no sign of wandering or adverse handling, its down to those **** pot holes!

Ill keep an eye on it for now.

Matt, the shims are about 90p each from Eurospares. They come in 1mm or 0.5mm and you're only likely to need about 4 in total. My memory could be failing me, but I think it was Eurospares page 55. Actually that's quite sad if I've got that right!

Do you mean Willie in Sighthill? If so, I used him this week - does a great job, and got a printout of the before and after toe, camber and caster for the front and back, together with the manufacturer spec/tolerance.

Thats the same guy, he really does know his stuff.

Ok, just come back from my local tyre guy, who I trust.

He has quoted £115 fronts and £140 rear fitted including VAT for Falkens.

He checked the tracking and it was miles out. It should be 0.2-0.7 toe in, and mine were toeing out, so that is the cause of my wear.

He blamed the terrible pot hole roads round us, and I am sure he is correct. I suppose I need to really get the camber checked as well.

A nice example. Mine is also with Emblem, almost the same colour combination but not the AC - picking it up today so there will be two happy 3200 owners tearing up the south coast this weekend!

Sorry to go a bit off the original topic but I picked my 3200 up from Emblem last Friday after having the radiator replaced and saw three 3200s in the workshop. They all looked gorgeous. I'm in Dorchester as well so we really ought to get together at some point.

Yep. Dorchester, Dorset it is. 3 Maserati's in the backwater that is Dorchester, we can almost fill a Dorset Car Park!
I'll PM you both when I'm back from holls and my knock sensors have been replaced.

HR Owen did mine giving me the print out before and after. I have to say that so far I am very impressed with the work carried out on my car. I am known to them now and whilst they are not the cheapest they always make me feel important when taking my money :) and the car runs like a dream

How much did you pay if you dont mind me asking, I might get Tony to do it when I go to Ace if he can price match Emblem.

Around a £190/£200 but that was in conjunction lots of other work. I am not sure he want to make a habit of that but no harm in asking

Ok, I have had some interesting information regarding the Gransport front alingment from a contact at a main dealer:

Here is the origional 3200 settings:

attachment.php

Here are the Gransport and 4200 specific settings, many may be the same:

Important - Under static load: all fluids up to top level (including fuel) plus 75+75 kg on the front seats.

Front
Caster +4° 35' ± 0° 6'
Total toe-in –4,0 ± 0,5 mm
Camber –0° 30' ± 0° 6'
Front height 152 ± 5 mm (Figure 1)
Rear height 170 ± 5 mm (Figure 2)

Rear
Total toe-in +4 ± 0,50 mm
Camber –1° 42’ ± 6’
Front height 152 ± 5 mm (Figure 1)
Rear height 170 ± 5 mm (Figure 2)

I have found a garage in Portsmouth that are prepared to do it, and I have a set of shims for caster and camber:

Hi Guys,This is a KDS (Kinematic Diagnostic Systems) wheel alignment setup i think your talking about and is a must for cars of this nature and with variable ride height.
Its the only way to setup a high spec sports car in my opinion.
The KDS check would be about £150 but if there are adjustments this can get to around £250+vat.
KDS was originally designed for BMW high spec cars but has since been used by all the top sport car manufacturers to correctly load a car and align it.

KDSII, 4 wheel laser alignment systems can be done at any BMW or specialist centre that has a Hunter KDSII with software.
This is very accurate and involves weighting the car down then mounting wheel plates . It's expensive but perhaps cheaper than premature tyre wear caused by bad alignment.
Having just got off the phone with
Roadwheel Tyre and Exhaust Ltd
they do not have a unit that can do anything like a KDS or even load the car to the correct ride height.
I am assured what they have is a basic snap on wheel alignment laser check (that has the capability if they were to upgrade it and get the software) and would be a complete waste of money if more than £40 IMHO

Hr Owen have a Brand new Hunter set up, and were doing a few free tests a couple of months ago , anyone having it done at anywhere other than a Masser dealers, will need to supply there own shims ,

I am going to get the KDS II on the S21YDR ...as i get a bit of sidewind effect and uneven wear.
Any BMW garage should be able to do it.
If its anything like the SL500 it handled completely different afterwards and was completely "planted"

My local tyre and exhust centre in Maldon have a hunter machine, a DSP600
Probably not the latest model, but I had my geometry done there a couple of months back...
and am very happy...It's where grimaldi engineering send their (customer) cars.
