I need some new tyres on my 3200GT, does anyone have an opinion on what to get?

When I changed from Bridgestone to Michelin on the Alpina I wasn’t that enamoured but each car is different.

I currently have Michelin pilot sport 3 and I think they suit her very well.

I think Michelin’s on the GranTurismo are excellent but I would have naturally gone Goodyear Eagle F1’s but they don’t do the sizes.

On a 3200/4200 I’ll start with the tyres I wouldn’t use, Pirelli and Vredsteins. The reason for this is not just the compound it’s more to do with the stiffened sidewalls.

I see it time and time again, hit a pothole and the stiffened sidewall splits the shoulder of the tyre and that’s you knackered. Most annoying when your abroad as our European cousins seem incapable of getting tyres next day, more like next week!

I had Falkens on my GS which on road were superb but track rubbish. I then found Goodyear Eagle F1’s and that is the tyre of choice for that chassis.

They are not even that expensive.

I suspect Michelin’s will be equally as good but personally have never tried them so cant comment on the 3200/4200 chassis.

Whilst we are on the subject of Pirelli, I’m going to stick the boot in I’m afraid.

They split, they are lethal under 10 degrees, they are expensive and to top it off they come with 7mm of tread new where everyone else comes with 8mm!

I just don’t get it?

Thank you both.

Haven’t had Pirelli’s on anything for years.

Will have a look at some Goodyear’s. I know everyone goes on about Michelin’s, they do for Alpinas, but I wasn’t too impressed.

It’s got Michelin’s on at the moment but they’re so old and cracked I can’t really judge what they’re like.

I used Michelin’s on my GS and was impressed with the result, however I have no frame of reference to compare them to the Goodyear so cannot comment on that.

Oh, and Matt is right about the Pirelli’s being ****, my rears split around the shoulder on the Modena trip and I gained a golfball sized bulge in the sidewalk of a front tyre. I was lucky to make it back!

Make sure when your considering Michelin, its the 'Pilot Sport 4 S' your looking at . They are the replacement for the older 'Pilot Super Sport' and are head and shoulders above the PS2, PS3 and PS4.
Eagle F1 are good, but won't last anywhere near as long as the PS4S. Somehow with the Super Sports and the PS4S, Michelin managed to get a tyre with incredible grip in all weather but still lasts longer than most others. Usually you can't have grip and longevity at the same time.

Me neither. Squirrelly as anything in this weather. I shall finish off my PZeros on the driver training day in May and be on Michelins by Le Mans. Unfortunately I can't get PS4Ss in my size, so unless Michelin produce some in the right dimensions by then I'll be on Pilot Supersports.

Its great to see that you are still being positive about doing things despite your troubles with the car, stick with it :clapps:

P Zero's been ok on my QP, apart from the jumping to one-side on lane changes I feel sometimes, Will replace them when they are below limit. haven't measured yet but they must be near limit now, 4.5 mill left a month or two ago, but I feel them spinning a bit more now when booting to exit a junction locally that doesn't give you many chances gap-wise...

Had nearly 13k out of them tho. Front's largely unworn....

I have SP3 and Vreds on the back, for now. Seems fine, although I'm a tiny bit concerned about the diversion I may have to take tomorrow...

The PS4S is only available from 19" and above.
Therefore for the 3200 and 4200 it has to be the PS4.

So to summarise.

No PS4s

No P Zero

Which leaves:

Super Sports, I’m dubious about them in the wet.

Goodyear Eagle F1

PS4, not sure due to previous experience

Falken, Toyo and Yokohama, no one has mentioned

I had no issues with Vredestein on my GS, it was the Ultrac Sessantas which i think have been replaced with the Vortis. I had 2 pzeros explode on my 3200, one leaving me stranded in a live lane on the M6. Never again. I went through a pothole on the slip onto the motorway which stuffed the sidewall.

If you can, Michelins are the way to go.
