'Twang' from rear of GT

This evening my GT has developed a 'twang' type noise from the o/s rear. Sounds like a spring releasing tension. I've had the car for a good few weeks now with no sounds or noises until this evening when it went from being perfect to 3 loudish and slightly alarming 'twangs' and a number of smaller similar noises in a 30 mile drive. Bit of a concern seeing as I'm currently in Germany and have to drive the thing home yet.

I'll have a poke around tomorrow in daylight and check the basics (wheels nuts, look for broken spring etc) but are there any known faults that would cause such noises? The car runs the fixed rate spring and damper set up, not Skyhook.

Thanks.

My GTS did this, same side.

Its un unseated spring, jack it up and take a look to be safe but i wouldnt worry too much.

Ok, thanks. I initially thought it was a poorly seated spring and was hoping a bit of spirited driving would reseat it. It didn't. It then occurred to me that hard cornering trying to rectify a suspension fault might not be too wise if it was, in fact, not a slightly dislocated spring! I then slowed down. A lot.

Will report back tomorrow.

Do the top mounts just fail, i.e. good one moment, failed the next? Any superior alternatives available or is it a Maserati only component?

Mine does it too, from time to time. Only seems to be when I'm going slowly, say when I just come to a stop or sometimes when the car drops the 1/2" or so off my drive in to the road. It just went in for a suspension check last week - a suspected broken spring turned out to be knackered drop links. As Conaero said, have a poke round but don't worry about it. As a mater of precaution and peace of mind get it thoroughly checked when you can, and keep an eye on the handling but based on your description it sounds like a common sort of twanging noise.

Not sure about top mounts. The springs can fail, the drop links likewise. Bushes need greasing to keep 'em sweet. There are various alternatives from FD and others but fundamentally the Maserati parts are good, unless you really want to beef up the handling, lower it or such like.

I'm not getting a twanging sound but a creaking at low speeds as mentioned in another thread - I'm getting it checked out by the garage at the moment while my car is in for something else. I'll ask them about twanging issue as well (suspect it's related) and report back

Sounds like it could be suspension bushes, they do give out a creaking when they are on their last legs

Back in the UK. It's only when the right hand rear suspensions under load (i.e. whilst cornering left). The car is going back to Bowkers on Tuesday. My money's on anti roll bar or the drop links. The rider height on that corner hasn't dropped so its not a completely failed spring but it could have particular failed. We shall see :)

I find that Maserati seems to have a lot more creaks and knocks from the suspension than other cars I have owned. My car was recently in for a check having had loud creaking from the front end at set off/stop but it went away and the car checked fine at the dealers. There is still a slight creak from the rear but the car is ok and it drives fine.

I agree, I think you have to learn to live with them. When I have test driven 'as new' demonstrators, I have heard similar noises and the MD folk don't seem to all concerned

The car is booked back in with the supplying dealer for Thursday. Was originally going to take it tomorrow but they only have mundane stuff as a courtesy car (BMW etc) so Ill hold off until Thursday to get the chance to try something a little more interesting. A late Stradale hopefully :)

I had exactly the same when I was in le mans trip. Got it checked out under warranty but they couldnt find anything wrong and I havent had a repeat yet. The rest of the thread and the maserati check gives me reassurance in that it is not serious.

Does Maserati actually supply Maserati courtesy cars? I thought the most prestigious marque to do this was Porsche...

Mine does something similar... nearside rear... only when the sport button is off ...had it looked at on a ramp but nothing obvious.. there was another similar thread recently suggesting it could be drive shaft related..

Mine in with Marranello's in a couple of weeks... (Ghibli on offer as a courtesy car ... hoping for a petrol one)...

Do keep us posted - and we can compare notes..
