Transferring reg numbers from motorbike

Silly question but is there anything stopping me transferring a registration number from a motorcycle to a car.

I have accidentally come across a vintage bike that has a great plate and am tempted to buy it - transfer the plate off and resell the bike.

I don’t think there’s any specific restriction. However a lot of classic vehicles have non-transferable registrations so that may scupper you.

There also used to be a rule that to remove the reg the vehicle needed to be MOT’d don’t know how that works with classic MOT exemption but in the past you couldn’t transfer to or from a tractor as they didn’t need an MOT

The bike does have an MOT so ticks that box, have tried to get through to DVLA - no luck yet.

You’ll need to see the V5 to determine if it’s listed as non-transferable. If it’s an import, has been re-registered or had its original reg removed in the last 20 years it probably will be.

I didn't think you could transfer bike reg to car but I may well be proved wrong - it won't be the first or last time

I think I may have answered my own question so have messaged the seller to get sight of V5. Advert does say it’s on original number with old log book present as well as current V5 and MOT.

The last paragraph is interesting does that mean you can't transfer registrations from cars that are over 40 years old and MOT exempt? This might impact some cherished registrations e.g. 250 GTO etc.

There is nothing stopping you MOTing a classic car thereby making it eligible to transfer, as earlier posts eluded many V5 documents state non-transferable. This is generally if the V5 has been lost and a new one applied for when a vehicle is older than DVLA computer records. I’d have a pop at getting my old MkIII cortina plate back otherwise.

You can transfer plates to and from cars and motorcycles - I have done it repeatedly.

The issue is is not just restricted to MOTs through - there are lots of plates that have been deemed non transferable by the DVLA.

For a while there was a trend of buying old mopeds and motorcycles to obtain the plate and then selling ..... as soon as the DVLA realized they were missing out on revenue they blocked it.

It is also to stop plates like this finding their way onto moderns where they may cause offence!! (And yes this plate is real before you ask)
