Blimey that’s bad luck and demonstrates what a farce keyless entry is, why it isn’t mandatory for manufacturers to fit a switch to turn the remote off is a mystery to me.

it is a farce, problem is with all this techy stuff the thieves are always one step ahead with their own techy gizmos, cant beat old skool physical mechanical anti theft stuff, manufacturers are just getting too cleaver for their own good

My old school measure is turning off the battery in the boot... and the fact that as a 15 year old 4200, there's a good chance it won't start anyway.

These modern cars with their almost impeccable reliability are overrated in my book. They're just asking to be stolen.

My insurance was £7 less without a tracker!
Unfortunately in my case, it was either fit a tracker or change insurers - at considerable extra costs. I have to have trackers on the Rangie and E-Tron also, but that’s okay as they come as standard on those cars. Strangely the Ferraris don’t need them, nor the Merc.

in the "olden days" i just fitted a hidden cut off switch isolating power to the coil, simplest things are are the most effective, imagine a modern day thief with all his techy gizmos being foxed by a cheap isolating switch these days. i'd pay to watch that

The experience with insurers is interesting and their differing views. The Vodafone integrated tracker subscription was live on my car for the first year and I assumed would be a pre-requisite of any insurer being willing to take the risk.

When it came to year 1 renewal (and as I was about to pay Vodafone another £300) I went on to price comparison sites and was amazed by how many insurers offered cover without a tracker .... and then nearly fell of my chair when it was actually cheaper without. Even with Admiral the premium difference is less than £15 without without a tracker.

On the other hand, when I bought my MV Agusta in 2015, nobody would quote without a tracker and so I spoke to the dealer and asked them to fit one. They refused and told me that MV Agusta do not 'permit' the instillation of an alarm or tracker and that doing so would invalidate the warranty.

Found a broker in the end who would get me insurance and went with them as my options were very limited. Fast forward a few years and price comparison sites offer insurance without trackers now and for very little premium difference.

I have a cheapo ebay GPS tracker hidden away but wired into an ignition circuit so it charges when ignition on only. The battery lasts about 3wks if you don't use the car which is fine. The SIM is on GiffGaff PAYG and I just call it once every few months to get it to send me a location text.

My mother's Metro was stolen though. For about 2 hours :)

Similar happened to my Brother's 'Limited Edition' Metro in Salford in the 90's. As he was given a lift home by the copper, they spotted it! A chase ensued till they abandoned it in a car park. the copper went after the driver, my brother, the passenger. Needless to say the passenger was a bit worse for wear than the driver...:hammer:

Was it a limited edition because it still had a working hydrogas system?
