Is it the same part or is it the same dimensions? I mean, clearly if it's the same TRW part number it's the same one. Otherwise is the £600 Lambo one the same? I fully expect it is, but I'm a little curious

I trust my Bulgarian friend; he got the Lambo ends off in his hand and recognised them immediately, went to the shelf and verified them from his own stock!

Old one off and new one one.

And it’s not the track rod end. Which means it’s the rack. That’s it, last straw, time to sell.

Oh that's real bummer, I feel for you.

Are the rack ball joints shim adjustable?

It's the links that usually wear, " the part that screws into the rack covered with the gaiter"
£80 last summer when I bought one!

Thanks Dave
It isn’t the links. If you can see the video I posted in the other thread it’s the rack bit of the rack, if that makes sense.

Just get yourself a good late 2001 second hand rack, I wouldn't faff about getting your old unit rebuilt

Give DA a call

He's recently broken up a genuine RHD AC, so he'll still have the rack
That's how I got my roll bar...

Dave

Thanks. Just got to check the collar that screws into the rack body, in the video it almost looks like it’s moving.

First I would like to thank Tim (Oddball) for supplying me with an old 3200/4200 track rod end to allow me to take measurements.

I trawled through dozens of track rod ends for a sensibly priced alternative, but was unable to find a direct replacement. The parameters that have to match are; length, inside thread type size and pitch, overall height, taper base diameter and angle, and outside tread size.

Every time I thought I had found a suitable unit, at least one of these parameters did not match. One that appeared to be the same as Maserati was from a Hyundai Accent 2, so I ordered one. When it arrived it looked perfect, I then discovered the taper was marginally thicker at the base. Argh!!!

Fortunately Tim had sent the steel insert that is pressed into the steering arm on the alloy hub into which the taper fits. This component is easily made in a lathe, so I measured the outside dimensions and made one with an internal taper to match the Hyundai taper of 7.5°. All that is required is to replace the Maserati insert with this one and fit the Hyundai track rod end.

I know this was not the original solution I was looking for, but it is a way to circumvent a possible problem if the Maserati track rod ends become unobtainable in the future.

It would be interesting to know what a company would charge for making a batch using CNC equipment?

One genuine Maserati track rod ends cost about £240 delivered, and the cheapest "Maserati" alternative is about £45 delivered. The Moog manufactured Hyundai unit cost £12.75 delivered and it is guaranteed for five ŷears. You can get even cheaper!

If nothing else it has been an interesting exercise and hopefully it gives both an alternative option and food for thought. If anyone does find a direct replacement, please let us know. Below are a few photos to peruse.
