Top speed

I have been considering changing my 4200 for a Granturismo. I started looking at AutoTrader not sure whether to get a 4.2 or spend a bit more on a Granturismo Sport with the 4.7 engine. What I found peculiar was that the top speed for the 4.2 is given as 175 m.p.h. whilst the 4.7 is only 160 m.p.h. even though it has 40+ more horsepower. Is this correct?

No not correct and most would recommend the larger engine... unless like me you just like to cruise around and like the lower entry price.

Yes I was leaning towards the larger engine as you say it appears most would recommend it.

I think from memory the top speed of the 4.7 is 186mph
Whilst that sounds like a reasonable assumption it does seem strange that all the adverts for the GT sport prior to 2013 are showing 160m.p.h. I don't know where they get their information from.
As well as which l also noticed that power output varies. Some give it as anywhere between 440 - 460 h.p. Some accurate facts would be nice.

There were several different outputs for different revisions of the engine.

The GT S has 440 PS (434 BHP) with a 183 mph top speed

The 2 seat Stradale has 450 PS (444 BHP) with a 187 mph top speed

The 4 seat Stradale has 460 PS (454 BHP) with a 188 mph top speed

The Granturismo Sport inherited the 460 PS engine, has an auto box and a 187 mph top speed.

I think

Thanks Zep. It's not that I envisage reaching 180 m.p.h. (I have hit 150 on the German autobahns a couple of times and that was my limit. ) I was wondering if Maserati had restricted the top speed like some other car companies. I also find it odd that car showrooms trying to sell an Italian superstar would lower the top speed.

What's the point of all this in 2019..I heard all new EU cars from 2022 will limited to 112 mph anyway!

When I first bought my old 3200GT quite a few years ago now, I got a genuine 167mph on the sat sav, it was still pulling but got freaked out thinking about the tyres!

Is the point about not being constrained by bureaucrats superimposing PC rules?

I'm all for the capability of high top speeds. I'd feel short changed if I'd spent £100k on an exotic GT for it to max out at 112.

My 1969 Lancia will get pretty close:)

I don't see the point in top speeds and it means nothing to me. Surely acceleration, torque, handling and braking is far more real world important.

Why you would want to do more than 70mph on our awful sh1tpot roads I'll never know. Unless your tracking it and even then on the Mulsanne Straight @ Le Mans I don't get the benefit or use.

I agree. 175 is enough for me.

I guess the assumption is that if it does 187, those other attributes will also be in place, which isn’t always the case!

Out of interest, how often have you driven your 4200 to the limit (of something around the 165 mph mark, I’d guess) and felt, oh no, drat, I’ve run out of puff! If only I could go 10mph quicker I’d be so much happier.

I managed 157mph in my 3200 before I started pondering my actual ability to manage out any potential tyre failure... she too was still keen to go some more

A friend of mine had an E60 M5 and used to regularly hit the 155mph limiter on a private test track. I think he was glad it was there though. Any incident at those speeds and the outcome is a lottery. I'd rather not roll the dice anymore.

Is this really true? That adds more fuel to keeping our V8’s

I bet Ferrari have got something to say about that.

Just VOLVO that will be limiting all their new cars to 112 mph but I guess it will only be a matter of time, forced black boxes and 1984 dogma... When we may as well all just get ourselves a 'Johnny Cab'...

on the autobahn last year on the way back from the ring (2 up with all the camping gear and a good haul of beer/wine) I got my 4.2 up to 170 on the clock 165 on the phones gps.... felt stable and as though it had more to give. I lifted off as a truck pulled out about 2/3's of a mile up the road and I figured I had around 7-9 seconds before I caught him up.

Heard Volvo we’re doing it voluntarily but not that it was EU ruling ?

Yep they are but purely as it saves needing two forward gears for electric cars that an unlimited top speed might need in some higher powered vehicles. The safety angle is an interesting marketing benefit (for them) but is not the real driver. Porsche are not doing this in their electric cars IMHO.

PS Remember Japan has been limited to 112mph for years.
