I had a 996 for a year and it just didn't do anything for me. Would love a 356 and almost bought a 914 (VW-Porsche). However, I keep seeing this Targa in Bold Street, Liverpool and just love it. I would have one of these, a hint of retro also.

I looked at a 996 a few years ago and it was functional fine but have left no warm feeling, however all the Boxsters and Caymans I have been in feel different, they somehow add a bit of character and it maybe due to the fact they are a bit quirkier. I can't put my finger on why but its how I feel.

Also a lot of the early Cayman reviews stated that if it had the same engine options as the 911 it would be a potential 911 beater which given the Cayman engine is mid-mounted is hardly a surprise.

Yes...........As JC said it was very convieniant how the Cayman fitted vey cozy in the middle of the 911 and Boxster in price, performance etc! A friend who has the 'Chips Away' franchise in Bromborough has one, he threw me the keys and said see what you think and can you give it some 'beans' so I can hear what it sounds like from the outside! It went very well and I preferred it to my 911. It was quick, but felt like it could be capable of giving a fair bit more.

The Targa is lovely, but I think only comes in 4WD guise, which makes it capable but a bit less playful. As far as I can tell, the RWD cars are a bit more fun.

I like the Targa always have and 4WD would be fine with me but I think I will stick with looking for one of the lesser relations

I've always liked the look of 911s and have always put them on my shortlist of cars to buy but have always found something better / more suitable.

And the Panamera was about the only serious contender to the GT as a 4 seater.

The problem I have with Porsche however is the owners. Most are w@nkers and those in the owners clubs will look down on you unless you have something special. And don't expect anything other than being patronised if it's not a 911 - my mate was told that one day he might be able to afford a proper Porsche when he turned up to a meet with his wife's Cayman. They didn't bother to talk to him to find out he had a wide body 993!

I've heard the same about Fezza owners and how they look down on Calis as not being a proper Fezza. I don't suppose it'd bother me much as I doubt I'd bother turning up at Poker owners club thing. This SM lot is more than enough of a handful!

Servicing is pretty reasonable to be honest on them from the digging I've been doing....More about do I want a 14 year old as a daily drive....and more the 20k a year.....Like the idea......
Prince Andrew never complained ;)
Joking aside find a properly looked after one and take it for a 30 minutes road test and I think you will be surprised.
Start of knowing it's fully serviced and then 6 months 10K give it a Lubrication service.
Not even had a flat battery for me.
People moan about standard hi fi but mine has the Pioneer Appleplay in it which is great for the phone and radio.
Still trying to work the rest out.
I reckon over 2 to 3 years it could be cheap motoring as your daily run is a decent commute.

I keep getting the urge to scratch that Porsche itch, its been persistent for sometime and it is only the VRT here that is stopping me. I really want a Cayman S (05 ish) but slightly earlier Boxster S would tick both the Porker and summer convertible itches in one go.

Ditto. Cayman is too cramped for me, but you'd be alright.

Targa for me is the best looking 911...Stunning.

It's got a great arrrse on it, Andy, that's what I like. Have a look at the new 992 cab as well. Lovely looking thing, sounds like a knackered hairdryer, though. One of them in GTS guide (not released yet) and with the exhaust making actual noise would be spot on.

Get an un Silenced Akrapovic exhaust on it and it will sound like a Le Mans race car!

The Boxster and Cayman are just a bit too cramped, and somehow far harder to enter/exit than a 911, so not good for me as a daily/easy car.

Years ago, when the Boxster first arrived, owners of those would look down their noses at us 944 owners. Now, a good late 944 is around £20k while a nice early Boxster is around £5k. How times change!
If any one is looking for an investment Porsche at reasonable money, Steve Bull Specialist Cars have just listed an amazing 944 turbo. One owner for the last 25 years and only 70k miles. And all for about £22k. Bargain, and bound to go up. Vaguely tempted myself, but I really don't need two, so I'll stick with the red devil.
