To lift or not to lift?...

All

I’m just over a week into Gransport ownership and am trying to get used to the gearbox and figure out the best way to drive it.

First impressions are good and I really like how free-revving the engine is. It is also easier to get it into the 4-6,000 revs range than my GTS was.

My question for the forum is it better to lift / feather the accelerator as I change gear? Does it depend on whether in Sport or normal mode? Is it different if changing at 6,000 revs compared to 3,000?

I know lots of places say it takes a few weeks to get used to the engine and gearbox, and I’m just looking to see what the forum wisdom is...

Contrary to the opinions above, I find that a slight lift (just enough from curling the toes) aids long-term ownership in the form of spousal acceptance and especially so with the slightly longer pause when out of sport mode.

When driving alone it's each to his own.

I do this. Tend to only not lift when in mad Sport mode and want the blam blam

I’m always in sport mode & was told to feather slightly, took me a few months to get used it as I came from an auto 3200. All good now.

The manual says don't lift I think but in general we all agree a curling of the toe smooths things out nicely

The gearbox in my QP was the last of the DS boxes and very much identical to the GS box and I always lift but more in the mind than with my right foot. A bit like the very light pressure you put on a trigger when lining up a shot only the other way round. I suppose it is more a feathering of the revs as you would with a normal clutch.

75,000 miles and still the original clutch is only 68% worn so it works for me.
I know another QP sport GT owner who plants his foot and just changes gear and he is on his third clutch at 65,000 mls but he is happy as he was told that was normal.

As Barrie says slight curl of the toes when pottering around but foot full in and no lift when in full attack mode.

Thanks all - helpful to hear others views.

I think I need to start doing toe curling exercises!

I've always lifted a little when in normal mode or though always in sport unless forgotten to press the stupid button that doesn't remember the previous setting.

It is a manual gearbox after all so I drive accordingly. Did the same in the E60 M5 SMG as was very similar.

Even in sport I left a smidge when low revs and upto say 5k. At 5k and above or medium to hard throttle or full tilt no need to even think of lifting. Keen your foot hard down and keep it there. The changes are lighting quick in full attack mode at 5k to red line regardless what other numpties say.

This is a Maserati Supercar, what’s all this lifting off when changing gear business, you do that in a fiat uno..!! Get in and drive the car like it was stolen, that’s what they were built for and putting the biggest grin on your face, not a gentle curled smile..!!

Unless you are coming round a French right hand bend on the wrong side of the road. Then I guess you lift!!
