Tie Rods and bushings

Hi All,

My car has been in for a service and they have reported that one of the rear tie rods has got about 1-2mm of play in it.

I was sure I read somewhere on here that new bearings can be pushing into the rod, but I can't for the life of me find it. Would someone be able to point me in the right direction?

Also, I am thinking ahead to replacing suspension bushes in the upper and lower wishbones. I see on the Eurospares site that they are known as flanblocs (if they are made of flan this might be part of the problem!) is there an alternate source for these or am I in the chair for £60 a bush?

Thanks again!

SKF 13mm rose joints

Craig also has a full tie rod replacement.

Felice (my independent) currently has a rear wishbone and is examining options to fully re-furbish.

I got a set of Craig's replacement control arms and they work beautifully. They removed the tiny bit of play there was in my rear lower arms. The wheel control and tracking is now perfect and the tyre wear is perfect also. Well recommended.

You could check out "Superperformance UK Ltd" as they seem to be manufacturing alternative bushes but not the tie rod bearings. I have not tried out these alternatives but noticed they were available as replacements for the flanblocs

I saw the superformance bushes, it seems they are bonded into the arms. Now looking for details on how they are removed and re-bonded... Thanks.

I was also looking at the superformance bushes to replace the ones in my lower front arms that are starting to perish. I don't think they are bonded in to the arms, I think they are saying that the bushes are manufactured by bonding the separate parts of the bush itself - they look pretty much the same as the OEM bushes. Has anybody else fitted these bushes and if so was it easy to press out the old ones and insert the new ones?

If they are anything like the Ferrari flambloc bushes, they are a press fit into the wishbone. You remove the circlip at either end of the bush and press the bush out.

However, it is easier said (typed?) than done. I have some aluminium bar that I turned up on the lathe (to use instead of sockets) and a mammoth 60 year old vice and it is tough work.

I just wanted highlight this bit - in my opinion, you need to get this sorted ASAP. Play like this can cause significant instability and really effect the drivability of the car. The toe will remain in when accelerating but will suddenly switch to toe-out under braking which can cause real problems when turning.

Zep, I would have that repaired before going to Europe, 2mm does not sound a lot, but going through the twisty passes on route could cause issues and potentially make them worse as they move around on the numerous bends..!! Better getting an Independent to fix that now rather than later..!!

shall we start a group buy maybe?...

I have to say though, that i don't feel much comfortable to replace the rod only.

Come on Rob...be honest...you must say that you are going to be a bad boy on those passes and you need all the stability :)

Nikos,
Absolutely mate, need a bit of foot hard down on the twisty bits, just so long as nothing is coming the other way, they are a bit narrow in places..!! You could have met up with us in that area mate, not far from Greece really..??
Cheers

Good point, I am! Interesting about the bushes, I read that they heat the arms on the 550 to replace the bushes and that they are bonded in, but if you pressed them out there is hope...

Just get a pair already made up from CraigWaterman11. Once play starts they will rapidly deteriorate and the more the play, the faster they wear. Also, if one is going, the other will be close behind. IIRC, it was around £150-160 delivered for the pair (arms, rose joints and dust covers).
