The GT is pretty much the same car underneath, same engines for sure. Have not actually driven the GT myself - which surprises me as the words appear here. There will always be initial halo effect to coupe of any range, due to half century of slick marketing. I fall for it myself often, but still have my QPV sport GT. Most likely always will because I love it and nobody else will (even buy it). early advocate of the GT now thinks the QPV is a better choice ( some old farmer who used to be in magazines)
Horses for courses, everyone* thinks they have the pretties wife at home.

This is pretty much where I am at the moment, holding off and holding off, meanwhile building up my next car buying pot, with an eye on having a QPV if at all possible. I suppose this in itself is part of the 'uncertainty' problem in that it's not good for the economy in general, so it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. I do think things will improve next year though, at work things are looking up with new long term contracts landing at our feet. The mortgage is paid off now, we've no other debts although we're continuing to spend money on home improvements, I just need to make my mind up which car / cars I really want and stick with the decision. That's the hardest part...!

That's a happy situation to be in, and exciting. Having worked hard to become debt free, it makes the decision of how to spend your money wisely all the harder.

Happy hunting! And pontificating.

Are we saying every car will need them done at some stage...Surely some have been OK or is that not the case...

I swear this bloody variators thing is a whole pile of worry about a low risk. Not all are a problem. My 09 GTS was at 53k when I sold it and still sounded as glorious and smooth on start-up as any brand new one.

Anyone want to hazard a guess at what % of cars ever need doing? I'd love to know.

Yeah..but having the opportunity to 'retire' at the grand old age of just 57, having worked my **** off for 36 years, was an opportunity that I didn't want to miss even if it meant making one or two sacrifices including the QP. Didn't fancy working until I drop and right now I don't have to. :) As they say life is full of choices.
Thats a different way of looking at it. My father is 59 works as a banker and has a 4 million dollar property in Melbourne. But he wants to continue to work & build a property portfolio. He also has no interest in cars unfortunately for me. So I grew up with no interesting cars. It's not about how hard you work at your 9-5 job but its the side investments you are able to do as a result of your job ie borrowing through the bank to gain property that allow you to build wealth for when you retire.

I got stuck on your SD1 comment...... .. really? Austin Alegros, Maxis and Princesses too?

SD
To my eyes, this model hasn't aged particularly well. Whereas the Granturismo has. It just looks 'right' from every angle and is practical for a niche coupe. The QPV design must be twenty years old, give or take and it shows.
Put it next to its roughly equivalent MB or BMW and it starts to look as dated as a Rover P6 or SD1. The difference being, SD1 prices are on the way up.
Why would you choose a QPV over a GT unless you had to have four doors.
In this car's case, the colour will put many off. 'Purple' is just about the least popular car colour.
Factor in the cost of ownership and the marque's reputation for unreliability and the market for this car and those like it, becomes exceedingly small. I know I'm not saying anything that everyone doesn't know.
I'm not saying its a bad car. Car buying is at least partly subjective if you're a petrol head, so beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My ten cents. I'm off to grab my tin hat and flak vest ;)

Dunno why the panic, as a QPV DS owner, means more cars for parts/replace/both for nowt!

Win win, if you are QPV happy and can't see anything better in the same genre, like me.....
