So, I go outside in the dark and open the boot of my GT to try and get at a fuse to get the third stop light (which is permanently on at the moment) to go out....while I am peering round at the battery compartment in the back I notice a lot of moisture and what looks like condensation on the battery etc. then I realise I can actually see my reflection in the the bottom of the battery bay...yes, that's right - there is about an inch of water in the bottom!! I am actually lost for words and ideas as to how something like this can happen?

Well, I think you've found the problem, at least.

Boot not shut or damaged seal I guess.

The strange thing is none of the carpeting in the boot or any of the interior is wet or even damp at all. Not impressed by this I have to say.

Hate to think it might be but gave you looked under the carpet in the boot? Hope it is just the battery compartment! Mine is a Spyder, so not sure of the construction around the battery, but a seal does sound like your best bet.

Yeah the spider and 4200 have quite a gap twixt the carpet and the boot floor. You can have 'quite a lot' of water in there before the carpet looks wet.

Thanks guys, fortunately am at home, but it was the third stop light that got me started on this whole adventure....just spent the best part of 30 mins manually draining the battery compartment with chamois, now dry. Fortunately the battery is on a slightly raised platform within the compartment so it was not sitting in the water, but there are a few other components in there that got a pretty good soaking I reckon. Actually now quite impressed the only issue I have is the third stop light remaining on. Will have to resume play in the morning. Thanks for all the thoughts. Stumps!

Thanks Contigo, just researching what an ecu reflash or remap. Seems like something only a dealer can do? Anyone have any idea what this costs? Thanks.

Ah yes there is a weak point somewhere underneath that can let the water in. When I had my electrical issues they pressure tested it for 4 hrs looking for a leak, but didn't find one.

Does your car have sunroof option? Drain tubes feed down to under car via batt compartment, these could be blocked?

When I was looking at buying a GT to replace my GS, I was advised to check for water in the boot and, apparently, the official Maserati advice to fix the problem is to drill a hole in the bottom of the compartment(!)

I kid you not ...

Probably the reason for all the GT rust issues I have been hearing about, rotten rear subframes and general deterioration of the undersides.

Anyone with a GT I advise you to get it under sealed.

Emblem did my Spyder and replaced the brake pipes and fuel pipe for £400 which I thought was very reasonable.

no rust here, so clean you could eat your dinner off it

Underseal!!!!

I wouldn't touch any valuable vehicle with underseal on it. One never knows what nasties have been hidden beneath the surface. Secondly - unless the underseal has been applied from manufacture, one can almost guarantee that moisture will be trapped and busily corrode from underneath quite happily over the years until one day..........

That's interesting, Matt. Any specific vulnerable areas? I generally have a good peer under mine at every opportunity and it looks ok to me. Unlike Roger I might avoid eating my dinner off mine (having to turn the car upside down would be a limiting factor, apart from anything else) but it certainly looks adequately free of corrosion. I've always take the view with any car that something which is starting to corrode should have a quick scrub down with a wire brush and a slosh of Kurerust.

I asked for mine to the inspected recently from a warranty perspective and the dealer found nothing. Maybe mine is too new?
