Thinking of getting a Diesel Ghibli as a daily driver...

I have had my Diesel Ghibli for just over three years, and had no real issues. The engine is thoroughly reliable, and the headline torque figure - 600nm makes a mockery of the standard petrol in terms of performance.
When cold the engine is noisy from rest, but at normal operating temp is probably quieter than the petrol. To me sport mode sound is very convincing, and over 40mpg is easily possible on a run. Servicing is expensive but that's off set by cheaper road tax.

P P S !!
I would add, there is a lot of criticism both here and in the media regarding Diesel. Plenty of manufacturers continue to develop and launch new Diesel engine models. Provided it's euro 6, you should be no more worried than if you buy a big petrol engine. Both are becoming more endangered long term.
To me the most important consideration with the Ghibli is how it's specced, it really doesn't make a great deal of difference what engine it's got.
In day to day driving and ownership a fully specced Diesel Ghibli with extended leather trim, 20" alloys etc etc, can look and feel as expensive as a top end Quartroporte, conversely a basic spec petrol or diesel will feel just that- Basic!

I've been looking for an older diesel lump to use as a daily driver to run on B100 bio fuel. As has been discussed here in various threads, I've seen YouTube vids where diesel owners have cut out a silencer and inserted a straight pipe. Some of the burbles etc that resulted were quite surprising. Can't recall which cars or engines, but it may be worth researching. No doubt someone else here will be able to shed some light and expertise on this option.
FWIW, given that diesel car prices and demand are both in free fall. Unless I could source an absurdly cheap diesel Ghibli or wasn't worried about resale value, I wouldn't touch one.

I test drove a Ghibli diesel when I had a BMW 335D. The Ghibli felt really slow in comparison. Fuel consumption was also a lot worse. Could see little point in changing. I now have a 440i which is even faster and still does 30mpg overall.

London is expanding the ULEZ zone. So if you don’t have a compliant car you pay another £10 for every day you use it.

Which is mega annoying. Means an old car with a less polluting engine than a diesel 4x4 will get charged due to its age.

When I got my road tax reminder today I mused about those in lower paid jobs who may run older cars, I was wondering if there comes a point where owning/ running a car becomes so cost prohibitive that There becomes a point where working isn’t worth it....

You can get on your bike like Norman Tebbitt's Dad did....

Yes, but you may have a Maserati for weekend fun. If the choice was between a BMW or a Maserati Ghibli as an only car, I would be ignoring the fuel consumption and theoretical speed advantage and going Italian for the style and rarity factor. I drove to Milbrook from Manchester and back yesterday and didn’t see a single Ghibli or indeed any other Maserati. Saw countless BMWs........all doing pretty much the same speed!

Tempting aren't they?
Also they wear the Maserati badge and they do look pretty wonderful. If I were to use a premium car for a daily driver, I would definitely go for one over a mass-market German model.
I still worry that by introducing a car such as the Ghibli, Maserati may be devaluing previous models? Alternatively this could be a double-edged sword and it actually makes the older models more desirable!

They are now under £20k for a leggy one. As I said we will be adding a white one to our fleet as they are a good workhorse and they offer 4 doors despite being small in the rear. Miles don't put us off if the car has been serviced well. Not too bothered about spec too and paddles. Watch this space....

Tempted but doing 16-18k miles a year, and actually enjoying bangernomics driving, but as we have the golf, an A1 and Fiat 500(soon for sale) I feel could do with something a bit bigger everynow and then.
