the engine temperature will read low and the needle will be at the left of the dial while the car is cold? it takes a little while to warm up. I presume its soem thing more problematic you are talking about?

No, the instrument worked and was reset during the journey. I turned the engine off and on again, but the needle remained at zero, then it started working again after a few kilometers.

sounds like either faulty wiring or your temperature sender unit is on the way out?

I had a curious problem recently which I believe is related to temperature sensor. On cold start the engine would be hard to start (flooded) and then misfire badly once eventually started. After a mile it suddenly clears itself and everything fine for rest of journey. On one occasion I noted this coincided with the temperature dial suddenly jumping from rest position to mid temperature position - not a gradual rise. Sensor now changed and problem seems to have been resolved ( albeit it has been much warmer and less damp since the swap). I don't believe Maserati has stock of temp sensor but its a Magnetti Marelli 40218301 C890 and is listed as fitting Fiat Bravo 2.0 16v and Alfa 1.8 16VTS
