The watch thread.

Phil, being a high level tech with a Seamaster you might appreciate the following wee story.

A friend of mine has one and had a shower wearing the watch, but unfortunately did not have the crown screwed down.
As you can imagine the watch duly stopped. He took it to his local jeweller and asked if he could repair it, and he said that he could. After about three months he hadn’t heard a thing, so he went in to see how things were going. To his horror, the jeweller handed his watch back in bits saying it was beyond repair. The idiot had even soaked some of the parts in rust remover which pretty much finished it off.

He asked if I would be prepared to have a go as I couldn’t do much more in the way of damage. After a good clean and quite a few new parts I managed to get it up and running and holding chronometric time.

Here are a few photos showing what I received, and the end result.

Hate to tell you this, but a Boss watch is probably far more trendy than anything else that's been posted so far!

Is that so? I know nothing of watches, always bought functional as due to my job they soon get wrecked, and priority in recent years has been one that i can actually read without my glasses on!, but reading this thread is making me think that perhaps I could do with a 'smart' watch, but wouldn't know a good one if I fell over it. As I reach a certain age this year, I might have to start dropping hints, budget will not be big, but don't want anything 'naff', any advice as to what to avoid?

Just bear in mind that Love Island is trendy ;)

Personally I'd avoid Boss and such brands like the plague.
For 'not big' budget (bearing in mind we all have different values of 'big'
Seiko
Tissot
Christopher Ward

All of which would be a start to give you a decent watch at (potentially significantly) sub £1000 in a wide selection of styles.

I'm sure others will have other input.

Some good choices there. I’d add Sinn, Fortis and Oris, and some of the microbrands like Timefactors.

If you are happy to go vintage the world is your oyster.

Nothing wrong with fashion brands like Boss etc. but if a quartz movement it will essentially be a £5-£10 movement (but still more accurate than your Rolex :)).

Oris is a good shout although I'd have thought that the price would be creeping up.

Second hand would be my preferred route (I think all of mine were pre-loved)

How about a Tag Heuer often find some good used buys there that's why I have kept mine for 18 years.Screenshot_20200114192431.png

Just noticed this thread. I love watches and spend as well as chop and change them quite often. Here’s a few of them, the main one missing is a Tudor Heritage Chrono in blue which is off for servicing. All of them are real except one. For fun, let’s see not only who can find the fake but why do you think it’s that one? It’s a good fake so not so easy to spot. Game on.

Maurice Lacroix Reveille
Porsche Design 911 Turbo Chrono
Mont Blanc Timewalker Chrono
Panerai Luminor Daylight Pam251
Omega Seamaster Mid-size
Panerai Luminor Marina Pam1351
Alsta Surf 'n' Ski (Very cool watch made famous being worn in Jaws by Richard Dreyfuss)
Omega Seamaster Chrono
Glycine Airman Base 22 Mystery (Full PVD, even the movement seen through a tinted flyback)

They have all different values and although I like watches, I'm no expert and buy what I like the look and feel of, in the main!

My guess is the fake is the Porsche, but it’s a pure guess.

I have long thought I want / need a Panerai Luminor.

Find it easier when holding them but as a guess it the Daylight. I can't find one with that dial design at all, and (although it might be the angle) the crown cover looks wrong.

Probably BS though

now I’ve done some googling - I think the Daylight is a good guess, but for a different reason. I think the real ones have numbers around the bezel...

Nice selection of watches Outrun.
Re the replica, no idea, virtually impossible to tell nowadays unless you pick them up.

I’ll go for the first Omega (non chronograph) being the fake. The hands look the wrong shape, and the bezel and bracelet don’t look correct.
