Sicily, home of the famed Targa Florio, Mount Etna, the Mafia and some of the best drivers roads around. The tiny island off the coast of Southern Italy is a long way from our shores and because of that it is difficult to integrate it into a normal driving tour.

Of course little things like that don’t stop us, the collection of amazing drivers roads and spectacular scenery in Sicily are crying out to be explored. We’ve answered the cry by using a little lateral thinking and so, Petrolhead Nirvana are proud to present a new tour for 2011, the Sicily Hire car challenge.

We’ll be staying in a 4 star beachfront hotel, perfectly located for the fun to come, enjoying the luxury facilities. We’ve taken care of breakfast and dinner too to keep extra costs to a minimum.

We thought long and hard about what sort of cars to choose to provide the best mix of fun, reliability and cost effectiveness. The decision - the new Fiat Panda was head and shoulders above the other options. It won European car of the year on it’s launch and we’re going to prove the old adage; “There’s nothing as quick as a hire car”

Itinerary

Day 1 Friday

Choose your own flights, (there are direct flights from Stanstead and Gatwick to either Trapani or Catania) on Friday morning to begin the adventure. At the airport, your prebooked (and fully insured) hire car will be waiting for you. Wherever you have chosen to fly into (as long as you make sure it’s on Sicily of course!) the hotel is a short drive away.

Day 2 Saturday

The Targa Florio was first run in 1906 and lasted until 1977. Originally the lap was 92 miles long but this was later cut down to just 44.6 miles and we’ll be doing the best bits of it, probably more than once! Described by some drivers as ‘totally insane’. This route through treacherous mountain roads, with tight hairpins and even climate changes, challenges everyone who drives it and you can almost taste the history as you head to the derelict pit complex in Cerda. With modern Autostradas taking most of the traffic burden, the back roads of the Targa Florio route are relatively free of traffic and we will be making the most of that, imagining what it would have been like to race those iconic Alfas, Ferraris, Mercedes and Lancias at breakneck speeds on the relentless twists and turns with the dust from the fields meaning grip was limited at best. Finally we head back to the hotel for dinner, our imagination running wild ready for Sundays adventure.

Day 3 Sunday

Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanos on the world. The last lava eruption was in 2008 but don’t let that scare you the Sicilians know their iconic mountain (which is nearly 11,000ft high) very well indeed. It means the geological landscape is full of incredible features and the mountain roads snaking up and around the 88 mile diameter base are what driving dreams are made of. After the intensity of Saturday we can (if you want to) take things at a more relaxed pace. Because we’re heading back to the same hotel you have the choice of following the planned route or taking some time out to do some exploring of your own. Mount Etna is a place you will want to visit time after time so there’s no harm in making the most of the time we’re there.

Day 4 Monday

Depending on what time your flight is there may be a chance to either enjoy the luxury facilities one last time, or take another drive to your favourite roads in the morning. Ether was it’ll be a sad moment when you hand back the keys to the hire car and board your flight home, you can always come back again next year!
