The 4200/GS Hybrid rides again

Thought I would write a quick update after almost 3 weeks of ownership of the 4200/GS Hybrid.

For recent history see here and here.

Pre purchase inspection was a crawl underneath the car, chatting to Dean who was very honest about the car, and reading the old threads about the car. That is the recommended way? No? What could go wrong? Well, it is how I buy cars.

I did have the car up on stands the day after buying it and crawled some more trough it. It definitely needed a service. Oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter, coolant, transaxle oil and filter, brake fluid and misc washers and bolts ordered. Air con got checked and refilled. Time was ticking on as we were due to leave on trip to Germany a week later; got all done except the gearbox and brake fluid. Gearbox oil felt and looked OK and I wasn't brave enough to bleed brakes as the bleeders look very rusted on and I didn't want to brake one off. Rear tyres got changed as one of them had side wall bulges.

Thoughts so far - not that different to working on a 928, similar amounts of space and weird ways to get to parts. At least the Maserati bodgers have a higher class of bodging. When I first serviced my 928 the front spoiler had wood screws and zip ties to hold it on, on the 4200/GS, only a third of the screws are in and only two look original - but at least no zip ties. ;)

Trip worked out fine - we travelled on the hottest days last week, temp never went above 90. Oil pressure at 5 once above 1.5k RPM. A family of four fits into the car, spare wheel well is highly useful as storage space.

Things to do soon are bleed brakes and clutch, gearbox oil and filter change, spark plugs, fix air box, adjust/fix handbrake, fix fuel flap/boot release. Ah, and fix passenger's foot spa - or avoid long right hand bends. ;)
Winter maintenance list is growing - check gear change, front wheel arch liners, tiny oil weep from rear of cam cover, high idle - check for air leaks. Investigate nut on oil pipe - one corner seems to have oxidized off. Find out why a piece of wood is rammed against head light box.

My inner child is having a great time, I still haven't used the radio - exhaust keeps me entertained. Not a car for early morning starts. :)

Welcome along and keep the posts coming.
A few of us on here are serial fettlers for sure.

Thanks for the welcome.

Fettling is a need, but also a great counter balance to an office job. Part of the factors that makes it possible to own cars like the 4200.

- but at least no zip ties. ;)

You just haven't found them yet. We don't use them to hold the spoiler on, there are none left after we've used them to reassemble the air filter box..

Welcome along, and as others have said, keep the posts coming, a few of us are happy to get a bit more involved with taking bits off these cars, and it always makes an interesting read :)

If the split nut on the oil pipe is the one that goes to the scavenger pump then there is a forum engineered solution of a replacement split nut that avoids the nees to remove the whole oil pipe assembly.

Part is c £100 from Hills Engineering (stolen from us) ;0)

Good luck and enjoy the project Oliver. Keep us all posted and great that the car is going to get some love, care and attention to raise it up a level.

It sounded awesome when you left driving down the lane. Worth the price of the car just for that

Fair enough, I take that point. My air filter box does seem to be able to levitate. Definitely need at least new mounts, maybe more.

I got going on drying out the car, getting out the pollen filter, and removing and cleaning the little black tube.

As expected, water in the pollen filter airbox, but not a lot debris in there, also nothing in the black tube. Blockage was higher, closer to the drain. The outlet and tube bend look a bit compressed to me but nothing I can do about that. Did as much cleaning with trombone cleaners as I could, then poured water into the airbox to check drainage. I think it will be enough to cope with the condensation from the A/C.

Have to order a whole pollen filter with frame, mine must have been shoved in at some point and got bent. Here the obligatory wet filter photo :)

Also one of the screws (with plastic nut) that secures the filter frame is missing, the other was hanging off. I checked for parts on Eurospares/Scuderiaparts but they are not listed. Anyone know part numbers or where to get replacements?

Also, in the air inlet on my car the foam seems to seal off the air inlet (see photo). Is that correct? In Conaero's guide the foam flap seems to be open.

Final question for today - part number for the sound isolation pads in the footwells. Anyone know part numbers? Again can't find anything in parts catalogue. Or just not bother with OEM and go aftermarket with Dynamat or similar?

Thanks
