Taking my Son to Modena...

...for a 3 night boys trip and looking for recommendations. My Son is 11.

We go in early June and the plan is to do the Maserati Factory Tour and likely visit Lamborghini too. The Ferrari factory tour gets absolutely slated online so might give that a swerve in favour of the museum (seems there are a few to chose from?). I know that Pagani are nearly as is Ducati (their tour gets rave reviews but we're just not into bikes). I've hired a car so can easily travel if needed.

Recommendations of which tours are worth seeing would be appreciated. Do I hit them all in a day - will that get a bit tiresome - how long do the tours take. I'm thinking of allowing some time to explore non-car related sights too.

The other thing is, I've provisionally booked a hotel in Modena, but is there much there other than car factories - would it be nicer to stay in Bologna for example and drive into Modena when needed.

Some general advice would be really appreciated.

Cheers.

excellent, your kid will enjoy it, all i remember from our trip many many moons ago was the wife let me loose for a short while and then it was on to the vineyards, i would recommend the vineyard tours whilst in the area, both my daughters did enjoy the scenery and vineyards and i think they were 13 and 14 at the time

I was there in September - Get lodging close to the centre so you can walk everywhere, make sure you have a parking permit included. You need to book restaurants ahead but there is one I had a great meal at that doesn’t need booking on Piazza Guiseppe Mazzini called Uva d’Oro.

If you do go to Panini, you need to book ahead, there is no charge but you can leave a donation. It’s really worthwhile, they have some special cars in the crowded museum. There is a very interesting story behind the museum, worth reading up on before you visit. One of the Panini sons runs the museum and he is easy to talk to.

Re the Ferrari museum, go to the one in Maranello and book lunch at Ristorante Montana which is next to the factory and where the F1 drivers go. Lots of memorabilia on the walls from drivers like Schumacher, Alonso and the like, not expensive. You can do Panini before lunch on the way to Maranello.

What would your son like to do? Does he actually want to go to museums?

If you took me to Panini, Lambo and Ferrari in a day I’d be bored shitless and I’m 45, might be a bit much for an 11 year old.

Not been but how about Pagani, it’s small and full of bedroom poster cars.

Sienna and Verona really worth a visit, Duomo in Milan too.
Absolute. Do an overnight in Verona. Hotel Academia just off via mazzini. Join the passageatta in the evening

Sienna. Jump of the heart to the mouth

I forgot - around the corner from Piazza Guiseppe Mazzini, on Via Emilia you can find the showroom of Ares Design, they have a new supercar, the S1 Project that you can see there, pretty impressive, I’m sure your son would love it, my 12 year old daughter certainly did.

The nephew was in Milan with his mates in the summer.

What did you see? Not a lot
Did you have any nice food? Not really
What did you drink? Stella
Come on, you must have had something Italian? We had ice cream.
What sort? McFlurry

clearly went to the wrong places, should of gone to viale certosa, via stilicone and viale zara

There are two Ferrari museums and you can get a discount on purchase and I believe a transfer between the two. The Ferrari museum in Maranello is worth a visit.
I preferred the Museo Enzo Ferrari which is in Modena, and is a short walk away from Maserati HQ. Sometimes they have interesting stuff in the shop/showroom - just before Christmas they had a Shamal, MC12 Versione Corse and a 3500 Spyder. The Lambo museum was a touch disappointing when I went in May but it’s currently being redone so it may be better soon. Didn’t manage to get to Pagani.
But the Panini museum was my favourite (obviously), though it’s not easy to get to without a hire car. The shop doesn’t take cards, just to warn you, but the farm shop does.

Thank you everyone for their thoughts. I'll certain spend some time Googling the suggestions.

So, Modena is a nice place to stay then? I had fears it would going to be like Detroit LOL.

As 'oneball' mentioned, one of my concerns is doing too much car related things, I too might get a little bored let alone an 11 year old, so keen to mix things up.

Centre of Modena is nice, the outskirts like most of 60s and 70s industrial Italy, rather crappy.. . then you have lovely countryside.
