Of the LR products, the Disco is the more practical and best 7 seat option, though the RRS is better looking, faster, etc. I’d have this or the XC90. The Merc looks too much like a corporate carrier/taxi.

I’m looking at 14 plate Freelander 2’s... Dean, would you say it’s worth the extra for a Disco? How much was yours? Pm me if you like. Dave...

We had our old FL2 SD4 HSE 2011 for 5 years and it was great. Bought it for 17500 at 3 years old and sold last year for circa £8k I think.

The DS is a big step on though. The 7 seater is really useful and we have used a fair bit. Boot is much bigger and the DS package is very clever. Not too big outside but much bigger inside.

I did a cracking deal with Marshall's LR MD Cambridge to take the old FL2 in and took this DS HSE Luxury Black at 3 years old again with 20k miles with 2 year MD LR warranty at £26k. They took old FL2 for £8k I think so was £18k on top of old FL2 to get into this one.

I had to find one in a tight date range. MY16 on as wanted new 2.0 Ingenium engine but before April 2017 I think so not to get caught by additional £310 car tax con. Wanted a standard HSE Luxury non-Black ideally but it took me nearly maybe 6 months to find this one as wanted HSE Luxury in Grey with cheaper car tax so had to accept the Black one as a compromise. Thought it would look too bling for us but actually it is OK. Ride on 20's is a bit too harsh but I barely drive it so not bothered

Wife is very happy. She has the most expensive newest car I have ever bought now.

How much is the FL2 in comparison? If not much more I'd say the DS is better. It depends what you want and if the DS offers anything more for your requirements.

The old 2.2 lump is a bit rough/industrial and the newer 2.0 Ingenium much better. Still not perfect but much better. MPG is a few better as well. Early DS had the same 2.2 lump carried over from old FL2.

I never liked either engine personally as typical diesel turbo with loads of lag . Petrols are hens teeth but would have bought one of option was there but 99% are weasel's.

Mmm. Spoke to my mate who traded his F2 in for a DS. Then swapped back again. In his words, you have to grow lady parts to drive the DS!!! I didn’t know he’d swapped back.

I can see why for differing requirements to us/me he went back. There is not much wrong with the FL2 for standard non discerning buyers. It drives pretty good for most. Safe and comfortable and decent off road. I used it to pull loads of fence posts out years back in the garden.

The DS is a much better all round car though. Depends what you want or need. We are.very happy with the DS and would no way go back to the FL2 for current requirements.

I guess there are many diverse views here. DS is a great car and - for me - FL2 steering is so light to make the car a pain to drive.

I ran D3 and D4s for years but could not stomach the D5 so bought my first ever Volvo as a replacement - XC90. It is a brilliant car. Took me nicely over Shap last week when there was an R8 reversed into the barriers.

For me I would not buy one of the balls out SUVs, just go for a regular one and put the saving into a weekend car.

I finally pulled the trigger on my new DD. It came down to the final 2 - the GLS and the XC90. Having tried both, I had a slight preference for the GLS but I could not resolve myself to spend over £45k for a 3 y/o car that was still the previous generation as the new one came out 6months ago.

In the end, I got a mega deal from a Volvo main dealer - on a 8 months old XC90 inscription petrol w panoramic sunroof, winter pack (gotta love the heated steering wheel), only 4K miles on the clock and 2.4years left on warranty. For £38k!! A no brainer. They also offered the same PX value for my 2013 Touareg than WBAC... That is just incredible value.

I never considered myself a Volvo guy - I used to joke that owning a Volvo was officially telling the world you had given up your sex life - but the XC90 looks good and offer the best value 7 seater on the market by far.
Time will tell how this car does - but the wife likes it very much and do too.

It's on our radar too.
You should def consider it. Cost of ownership seems fairly reasonable. Insurance is 30% less than what I used to pay for the Touareg (which was 1/3 of the value) - points to no fatalities on the XC90 since 2002. Annual service under £300 and road tax is £145 a year (before “luxury tax” surcharge). The warranty costs £380 to extend for 12months at the end of the 3 years.
Looking at 3-4 y/o model w 30k miles, looks like depreciation isn’t too bad either.

Have to agree, test driven one and liked it, but the wife didn’t like the driving height positioning, she is no midget (if you can still say midget on here) but not right for her, but the disco she drives now is, so that was the end. So it’s a GLS as far as I can see, likely finalise a deal next week. But I agree with your choice.

At least you didn't buy it just because the seat inserts matched the days handbag, like we ended up doing! lol ( Mercedes with dark green inserts.)

We got a brand new XC90 Inscription Pro T8 last October. Great family motor, refined and surprisingly quick for such a barge. Still haven’t worked out what all the screen controls and buttons do but that aside, it’s a great car.

A few months ago I bought a new Volvo also - great car at a great price. The dealers have advisors to show you how all the tech works, you just book an appointment and they’ll run through it all. Worth doing for the sake of half an hour or so, especially if like me, you are not naturally tech-savvy.
