I always drop down to neutral for the last few mph when coming to a stop. This will probably cause my brakes to wear more quickly but my question is

1) flipping in and out of gear is that going to cause the F1 pump to wear more quickly?????

2) If by flipping out of gear all the time saves the clutch , does it not make an atom of difference to the F1 pump

4) What does everyone else do when driving in heavy traffic????

I tend to go into N when waiting at junctions and lights and usually take off in second unless on a hill.
I must admit that i feel the car hates to be going slow and wants to get into 3rd asap.
In Heavy trafic i try to make a gap that might allow for the car to get over 1200 RPM or it Kangaroos.
Maserati recommended going into N when stopped but staying in first when parked.

i always flip to neutral when i know im going to be coming to a complete stop.

Also my car hates 2nd gear when the speed is really slow, its just abut crawling so not enough for it to go into 1st, then when i get back on the gas, i seem to get hesitation and slippage, so sometimes i manually select 1st.

If i know i have definately got to stop then i do the same Peter and flick into neutral and coast the remainder, worst with the CC box is slowly coming to a stop in 2nd and then having to put your foot down to carry on just as its changing into ist , the box gets confused momentarily , Certainly beneficial to the clutch to stay in neutral whilst waiting at a junction , what is a no no is to be sitting in ist with your foot off the brake for extended periods , these cars love to be treated aggressively gear change wise and acceleration wise so it pays to be as positive as you can

I've never really got my head around this 1st / neutral question whilst stationary. The clutch is dis-engaged under both circumstances. My update dispenced with hill-hold, so whether in first or neutral, if I'm on a slope I roll, so therefore clutch is dis-engaged. The only difference is the increased 'state of readiness' if in first just awaiting a throttle response. I can therefore see how it could 'stress' the F1 pump, but I can't see how it makes any difference to clutch wear? Very happy to be enlightened though.

Yeah Loz but does all that flipping in and out of gear put more strain on the F1 pump???

No definately not , the pump is set to cut in when ever a pressure drop in the system is sensed, it cuts back in for the required time its takes to get the pressure back up, the odd gear change here and there wont make a blind bit of difference , Most clutch wear/stress is done in first , up or down the box

I tend to flip into neutral whenever it looks like I am going to stop and quite often from 3rd gear!

If I don’t stop then pull the paddle and the car selects the appropriate gear for me e.g. 1st, 2nd or 3rd!

I tend to use the paddle to change down instead of letting the car do it for me. I guess this wears the clutch more but saves on brake pads?

Roger I don't think that changing down manually rather than letting the car change down is bad for the clutch - on the contrary when the car changes down it is similar to when in auto mode and it seems to feather the clutch in a tad more than when doing it manually. So I think clutch wear will always be slightly better if you do the gear changes rather than waiting for the car to do so.

On the subject of going in to N, I also do this as it seems that the common consensus is that staying in 1st is bad for the clutch - but I agree that this seems contrary to logic as Emtee points out, when in 1st with foot on brake, surely the clutch is completely disengaged? If I am on a slight incline and take my foot off the brake when stationary in 1st, the car does start to gently roll back - surely that 'proves' what Emtee and I are thinking in that the clutch is not engaged?

Anyway to be on the safe side, I would always advise pulling in to N when you know you're about to come to a complete stop.

Yep, I am a neutral flipper, and I always try an gun it not labour and slip the clutch, its the worst thing you can do to them.

Are you saying that the clutch engages quicker if you hit the accelerator harder when pulling away?

Don't they also adapt to your style of driving......plus install the DBW unit to improve throttle response??!!

Correct Parisien and the DBW would improve the throttle response and significantly reduce the lag and clutch slippage from a stand still.

Making the clutch engage quicker thus less slippage and making the subsequent changes smoother and quicker, the result of this also saves on clutch wear as the box is programmed to shift quicker reducing slippage.

Thanks
