Stupidity????

Yesterday me and and a friend of mine went to test drive a car, the dealer was very lenient and let us have a go in a Seat Cupra 225, i had never driven a car with this power before and i was very surprised when the dealer said "go on, enjoy yourself mate" i was quite nervous to say the least and on the local A roads where national speed limit applied, the car went from 30-60 mph before i knew what was happening, it was then at that point i said, i have had my go, see what you think so my friend who has driven for 6 months obviously enjoyed the feeling and thought it would be a good idea to see how quick it could go, he hit 110 mph down the local by pass.

I know when your young and you pass your test it feels great, looking back i think i was lucky not to have an accident, i did not drive anywhere near the limit for the road but having never driven a car that quick before it was a bit of a shock. I am glad i did it because it has taught me that fast cars will wait until i have at least been driving for 4 years. It was a bit of fun and i did enjoy it, but not again.

Anyone else done anything similar???

I've only ever test driven cars I've been genuinely interested in buying - otherwise bad form and a waste of others' time to be honest.

WHen test driving I never give it large as its not my car...You know if a car is right for you when you drive off I always find...No need to test it's top speed....

Yup, and thankfully everyone testing a car I've sold has extended me the same courtesy...it's unsettling enough having someone else drive your car, even slowly!

Looks clean in the pics. Fulrun tyres always a bit of a giveaway though - you can tell a lot by the tyres fitted to a car re previous owner/approach to car ownership

Yep i noticed the tyres straight away, the interior was nice but the bodywork was terrible, peppered with stone chips and where the side skirt meets the front wing there was a big chunk of paint missing and the red looked faded.

I drove to the speed limit as i knew it was not my car and it did not want to get caught up in the "spur of the moment"

I salute your self-restraint, Adam. Not sure I'd have had the same decorum at your age! Come on, we all know what we were like, a pat on the back is in order, Adam

Agree whole heartedly , you dont have to take the car to its limits to feel its capability , providing you can feel enough for it to do what you want it to do then generally things will be okay , what i will do is drive it a little bit hard in the early gears , which should notify you of any untoward vibrations etc , oh and the odd hard turn in doesn't go amiss to test the steering jointsplay

and a good slam on the brakes of course. Once tried one of those lexus things for the wife, almost scared the bejesus out of me and the salesblokey when i hit the brakes!

Straight line speed is probably the least important thing to test - so long as it pulls so good for you Adam.

Have you passed your test now then Adam?
I must have missed that post, congratulations!

Everytime I've gone from a phase of driving mediocre cars to getting back into a supercar I get a massive rush of adrenalin and arrive at my destination trembling, after I giving it a good foot full. Sadly that effect/feeling wears off fairly quickly and then you become used to the power and the speed.

With regards to giving it some on a test drive, I think exceeding the speed limit by any great margin is pointless. However, chucking it about a bit, testing the brakes and brief hard acceleration are all definitely required to see if anything is loose or worn.
