Strange noise from my QP?

Can anyone please help me with a diagnosis? I started my 2008 QP 38k miles ZF gearbox tonight and in Park and in Neutral there was a loud ominous scraping metal to metal noise. In Reverse and Drive there was no problem. This spooked me as it sounded alarmingly expensive? After a short journey home (just 5 miles of normal driving without any issues) I tried it through the gears whilst stationary and the problem hadn't gone away. Turned off the engine and re-started it and no noise whatsoever coming from the gearbox as I moved it thru the gears. Any ideas on the cause? Is it likely to recur? Is the car still perfectly driveable without doing damage? I've enjoyed six months of completely trouble free motoring so far; and car is soon due for 2yr service, so I could get this checked out now or wait?

Hi Adrian,

I am positive I experienced the same sound on my QP once, and never returned during my 9 months of ownership. The ZF box is very reliable and smooth, was the car sitting for any period of time prior to this? It could be that a linkage or something seized up.

That's slightly re-assuring. I drive the car everyday, although currently only working 5 miles away from home so regular use on a daily basis, albeit very short distances.

Not to give false hope or any sort of expert advice, but perhaps she just needs opened up a bit and driven some more, loosen the transmission fluids up and that..

Sometimes its the simple things!

The issue went away as quickly as it came. HOWEVER it did spook me, so much so that I traded the car over last week end and bought a 2yr old Ghibli with the balance of a Maserati warranty! Radical reaction I know, but it feels so nice to regain some of the modern toys that we are all so used to in today's cars. Hope I don't regret this knee jerk reaction.

I don't think I've ever owned a car under warranty, depreciation scares me much more than any likely repair cost, even on a Maserati, I think you'll come to regret it, hopefully it's a petrol

If reliability is the concern, I would recommend the diesel. Having read on the US Ghibli site about issues with the flaky Ferarri assembled petrol engines. In fact I don't think I have read a single reliability issue re the diesel.
Also I think the diesel will hold its value better too.

This is now prompting some interesting comments!

Maserati ownership for me has been both recent and suffered mixed fortunes thus far. From never having ever considered the marque, this is my 3rd purchase in under 12 months - and I am now a huge fan.

No.1 4200 Cambiocorsa A non runner which was not fixed by a well known repairer who should have been able to fix it. Sold it on as a project to somebody who I understand was more fortunate in the repair than I had been. This cost me dearly with no return.
No.2 Low mileage QP 2008 - excellent in all respects except one time and one time only made noises that sounded like variator issue, this subject discussed at length on this and other forums; except one time and one time only made noises that sounded like major gearbox issue, subject of this posting. But I had just enjoyed driving QP for 8 mths and spent no money on it. Expenditure due was big service; 3 kerbed wheels (previous owner); bodywork detailing of several dinks to doors; attention to bottom edge passenger door where rust evident inside and out; peeling leather on inside door cards ...

So I figured that I could save £3k on the cost of exchange by avoidance. That is doing a p/ex now - not to mention leave behind concerns about variators and gearbox and any issues found at the service. (After all there had been a 2yr gap between visits to the garage).

No.3 Differential to get me into my 2014 Ghibli 1 owner 20k miles, private plate, lovely colour, HR Owen supplied and maintained with 2 stamped services was £15k - with a 1yr remaining Maserati warranty. It is a deisel by the way. Less the £3k that I didn't have to spend on my QP than it really only cost me an additional £12k. Warped logic maybe - but I'm convinced this was a good move. I am enjoying all of the things that the QP didn't have like voice recognition bluetooth tel/touchscreen/satnav that works/more comfort - and hopefully RELIABILITY and more sensible running costs. Tax £185 not £505. Fuel consumption 40mpg not 18mpg.

Yes I miss the lovely tune of the old V8 exhaust notes - and accept that I am now in a 275bhp diesel and not a 410bhp petrol car. There is a price to pay.
But I was finding the QP scarily fast and my driving habits were becoming well let's just say dangerous. So a safe choice. I think I did the right thing!
It still seems to receive admiring glances though.

Pictures and does it have paddles, Skyhook etc?

I'm pleased with my Ghibli but still struggle with the idea of diesel Alfa's so a diesel was out for me. I get mid 20's around town in the S and 30 ish on a motorway run for comparison. So far resisting the scary driving, except when trying to follow other members of the forum to events.

This was as I got her when picked up.
I put the Classico wheels as they were refurbed and ready to use whilst I got the 7 spokes done.
