My 3200 has effectively straight through rear boxes and it sounds glorious stationary.
Each pipe entering rear boxes has rusted out. Tempted to just leave it with rear boxes for show but empty. The pipe can just be joined up.

I want to add one more thing.

Engine sound is a symphony of induction, exhaust, and mechanical noise. Making only the exhaust louder will ruin the harmony.

Not really. It's a bit like a conductor asking for a bit more horn......

What's it like on a long trip? I do occasionally do quite long vacations in the car, and to date they have been brilliant.

Straight throughs all day long
Cut out the centre box as well, makes the neighbours plates rattle in their kitchen on start up in the garage - separated by a footpath and a garden fence.
They didn’t complain so myself and son in law both fitted MotoGP type tubes to a 600and 750cc sports bikes - 135db at full chat.

My 3200 had straight through rears and the Larini cat delete straight pipes - it didn't throw up the engine management light (unless that was not working of course?) It sounded amazing and nowhere near as loud and obnoxious as a NA car with a similar set up

Not that I know anything about exhausts, but I thought that having an X or H meant that you got scavenging with the exhaust from once side helping the other in some way and giving you a few more bhp. If there is no connection as per your straight thoughs you don't get that - but maybe it's louder as a result? (Which is the object of the excercise of course!)

I have a standard front system, with straight through rear pipes. In a nutshell:

  • It's too much for a daily driver IMO. Just the wrong side of anti social.
  • Sounds awesome, a little more boomy on the motorway, but not too bad.

Its a brutal sound - not particularly musical and much different to the 4200 with a sports exhaust for example.

There was me thinking i might scratch a 14 year itch and i appear to have opened a can of worms, I am detecting two camps here :). If i have the energy i would swap them over regular to alter the noise and the experience and keep the neighbours sweet.

Only two. What a luxury! They only hung me the right way up yesterday :p

I remember you coming over to see David years ago.. your 3200 was so loud you could hear it all the way to the A5! ;)

If I’m still allowed an opinion on here, IMO, there’s nothing at all wrong with that. It sounds really quite nice.
Yeah, it's gone downhill quite badly since you were last here, unless you like a little French car or have the picture of the day or have an unhealthy interest in ancient Women, or you've spotted a masser, actually doesn't have to be a masser you've spotted, yeah all pretty ****!

A standard 4200 is very muffled for what its meant to be so imo you ought to have some modification to it. The ideal OEM level is the GS muffler with the x pipe like the american GS.

Even if you go straight pipe from the catback I find it really difficult to **** up the sound of these engines. Drone aside.

I think most of the posts here refer to straight through pipes from front to end but as far as I understood the question was regarding the end boxes.
I had 3 types of straight through end boxes mounted on my 3200 GT.
First were OEM rust removal mufflers.
After 65.000km’s the inner stuff of the mufflers was rusted and blown out. Completely empty! The sound was nice but at some frequencies it sound like an empty can of Pepsi.
Second was a plain straight through with just two Y-pieces. That was probably even 10kg weight reduction. Sound was louder than the previous but a little metall’ish.
My favorite straight throughs are the Fox stainless steel boxes. They are basically straight through, but the pipes have a special kind of perforation inside, surrounded by damping wool.
That sound is addictive! Lots of soft bass at low rpm and screaming when it comes to 6000rpm.
They also look stock and did not alarm the police in the last 5 years.
Here the police is very strict with regards to loud noise.
They will measure the decibel compared to stock and if too loud, they will collect your license plates on the spot and getting them back is not an easy task.
