Stolen Keys

Awoke this morning to discover that someone had broken in - stolen two sets of car keys (as well as my laptop) and stole my brand new Kia Sorento which was parked on the street. Fortunately the 4200 was parked across the road in a garage that is not easy to see. I drove straight to the police station to report the crime then when driving back close to my house saw my Kia parked up in the road opposite. I pulled up in front blocking it but the lowlife inside realised that it was his victim because I was in the maserati which I reckon he or his mates was looking for. He shot off, I rang the police straight away and then tried to follow him - but no luck.
So i am in the position of having to keep the car at my brothers until I can get the lock changed. The car insurance say they wont cover that and the house insurance say its down to the car insurer!! And I bet it wont be cheap to replace with a new barrel etc.

Any ideas for a cheap solution as I know they will come back to find it.

Bloody **** , thats just blatant , best you ring David Askew , he will probably have a new set of barrels and maybe keys , you could either do an exchange andn a small fee for him if you explain the circumstances , you will have to mail me for his number or email him direct he doesn't seem to advertise his number on his website

Hi mate first go back to both insurance companys and tell them to sort it. One or the other will be liable for costs, it will be your house insurance if they were stolen from inside. If they pay for any of other the stolen items then they should pay up.

If they continue to say no then just contact the insurance Ombardsman.

Thanks

It was manic when I got to work eventually today so I just didnt get a chance to argue the toss with Zurich Insurance as I am sure they are liable. The claims line was an overseas call centre. I asked where it stated in the policy that keys were not covered if stolen from the home to be told that there was no statement in the policy to say they were covered! I will have time first thing tomorrow to try to contact a UK representative.

Wish I was near Bristol, I have now put the car on my brother's drive which is 5 miles away where the car cannot be seen from the road and it will have to stay there until I can get the locks sorted.

Thanks for the suggestion Loz, if I have no luck with insurance I will give David Askew a go.

I really need to get away from where I live, when I went to the local police station to report the theft I had to get special permission to get through, the house next door had been firebombed during the night!!

Now I have got my replacement laptop up and running I can update my situation. Just read Granturismo Dan's tale of woe - I'm still angry - the feeling doesn't go quickly!
Thanks for the words of support, particularly Dem who offered a safe storage place, but thank goodness I didn't need it. Well to be precise thank one of my daughters who had taken my 4200 key off the key rack because it had a front door key on it which she used then left the key in her bedroom while she was at her friends house for a couple of days - I lost it a bit with her when I found out what had happened because I had told the police and everyone else that the burglars had taken it and moved the car to my brothers! But at least I don't have to stump up for changing barrels etc.

Anyway the other development is that my 4x4 is now recovered by the police - I was driving near my house last saturday week and saw the car drive past me!! The red mist took over but unlike on the day of the break in when I saw it and pulled in front of him I didn't blow it this time. I turned round and followed him from a distance and called the police. He drove into a dead end estate and I was told to back off by the police - which I did. They found the car but as far as I am aware did not get the bloke - who was the same person I saw driving it after the burglary - I don't know why they didn't wait for him to come back out from whichever house he disappeared into as I am sure he lived there - I read somewhere that over 90% of break ins are carried out by people who live within 5 miles of their targets.
He hadn't even changed the number plate and was taking a huge risk driving around near me as it is a distinctive car - white with blacked out windows. It has been almost impossible to communicate with the police to find out what is going on - and when I have gone into Croydon Police station no-one can tell me anything as the network is always down - their computers look ancient!
My laptop is being used and I can identify the IP address and ISP (Vodaphone) because I have an automatic backup programme which is still running but the police are not remotely interested in contacting vodaphone.
Feel like staking the estate out but the small matter of work puts paid to that!

Good to hear your keys aren't doing the rounds of the criminal fraternity Y, and also that you've recovered your 4x4. Any damage? As for the ****** that took it, and the police response...... you have my sympathies. How can it be right that the response (or lack thereof) causes as much consternation as the theft itself?

Luckily I did have a second chance - I saw him in the car just after the break in when I was returning from the police station - the red mist came down and I pulled in front of him but he pulled round me and disappeared. I was really stressed with myself for days that I didn't carry on past him and call the police without him realising. When I had a second chance there was no way I was going to blow it so was much calmer. What is really stressing me now is that I cannot find anyone in the police who can update me on what happened - I need to find out whether any of the car's contents were found and I think I have the right to know what they are doing about someone who stole something worth over £25k - it's hardly small scale!!!

Just seen this - you definitely have my sympathies!
I can't believe that they're driving past your house in your car, simply beyond belief. Whilst I can certainly understand the desire to confront them I would advise you to be very careful, they seem to have a screw loose to say the least so there's no way of saying what they might do when/if cornered.
Bad show from the rozzers too.

Hope it all sorts itself out mate.
