Sticky switches: Your Forum Needs You!

I've been in touch with Lorenzo about cleaning up the 4 switches / buttons (windows, MSP and SPORT) on the panel console of my GS. My reservation is that I'll need to take them out, be without them while they go off to the USA, and hope they don't go missing before refitting.

I'd feel a lot happier if I knew there was a back-up set of buttons to hand. So I was wondering whether anyone was lucky enough to have bought replacement switches and buttons while they were available and still have their old manky ones lying about. I thought we could create a spare set which gets passed around the forum.

Here's how I envisage it working. I'll put together a manky set and send it off to Lorenzo for him to work his magic. Once they're back, I'll swap out the refurbished ones for my manky ones (panel off just the once and no downtime), and the manky ones become available to the next forum member who wants to do the same.

So, if you have any spares you're willing to contribute please PM me. We don't want anyone being significantly out of pocket, so if the donor buttons change hands for more than a nominal fee that cost will need to be passed on to the next person who makes use of them. The merry-go-round will presumably stop one day, and don't forget that even those with new OEM buttons may one day find themselves with the issue returning, assuming they still have the car, so please bear in mind when setting your asking price!

Assuming there's no significant financial outlay I'm happy to get the ball rolling for sets other than the 4 GS parts I'm interested in, so let me know what you have lying around.

And if there's a better way to do this then please let me know...

Zep spoke to me in the pub last night about you. I have a pair of window switches you are welcome to borrow if I can find them...think they are on the shelf at work.

Pm me your address.

If you get your hands on some manky ones and have nothing to lose don't rule out having a go yourself. Mine were terrible and I was going to replace with new but had a go. Methylated Spirits, Sticky Stuff Remover, Cotton Buds, Microfibre and a strong thumbnail and lots of patience. Rub on meths with cotton bud, scrape with nail, rinse and repeat. It gets worse before it gets better but does work and does not remove the lettering. I rescued all of my heater controls, window switches and all the buttons in the centre conssole (Sport, MSR, Auto, HRW etc). About 3 hours work sat in the car listening to the radio. The only thing it was not succesful on was the heater vents which I replaced. Zep has seen the result on my car and can comment further.

Sent my old set to Matt some years ago and the old Sport was sent to a forum member last month.

You may be able to dig out my old group-buy thread which should have all the recipients names to PM.

The problem with mine is the paint/ rubber coating wearing off. Is there a solution for this?

As I understand it that sounds like the phenomenon we're all experiencing. Lorenzo can remove the coating and get it back to a more durable matt black without adversely affecting the decals.

They aren't decal. If you want the full chapter and verse there's quite the threads on it on Maserati Life <sigh>

I can indeed confirm that John’s results were excellent. Well worth a go.

Yup the decals are etched into the paint and are semi translucent so they let the dash back light through. I think Lorenz refinishes the surface and has one of those little laser etching rigs to cut in the decal symbol for each switch

The be last option for GS folks is to get a group together, buy a replacement panel (it looks like they are about £300) and then put a complete set into circulation for refurbishment.

If Plan A fails of course.
