I am sure this subject has come up on many an occasion before, but I would be grateful of any advice offered.
Thanks.

How loud do you want it?

If only a little louder then id start off with the centre section - un silenced X or H pipe depending on what sound you prefer (X for me)

Sports cats give extra noise and the benefit of extra performance - I notice that Larini have recrntly dropped their prices for these and they are a little more reasonable now. If you go down the custom route then make sure you find a good welder

Back boxes tend to cause drone depending on what you do I recently swapped the standard 4200 ones to GS boxes and with the valves open it drones around 2k rpm but sometimes I want that and when I don't I close the valves

The members on here are experts on exhausts, pick a decibel level, harmony or off beat and those in the know will advise on the best solution.

IMO X pipe, GS boxes (valved or otherwise) and a sound to die for

Thanks for the replies so far, looks like I may well let the thing evolve, and that would suit me better right now anyway, a complete set of pipes appears to be lot of money.

Which X pipe should I go for and what potential pitfalls are there?

I meant to add that I would like more noise, but not too much, I don't want problems getting an MOT or engine management problems.

I removed the OEM center box (Resonator) and replaced with Forum X pipes. I noticed no particular increase in noise, but the X pipe did alter the tone. Last month I fitted Larini back boxes, but when I get home in a weeks time I am going to refit the OEM center box. Dont forget the center box is not a muffler its a resonator, and the purpose of a resonator is to eliminate unwanted resonance at particular RPM, better known as as exhaust drone.

If you desire a performance improvement I can highly recommend changing the front pipes first. It liberates the breathing of the engine so much so you think "why didn't they do it this way from the factory". It is that good. Next I changed the back boxes to Larini with extra sound and slight performance gain. Not as much as the front section. Next week I am having Larini H Pipe and rear section connecting pipes fitted, which I picked up in a recent trip to the US. So my car will be stainless from the headers back. Lastly I also have the Larini remote control for the back boxes to be fitted so I can stay in Sport suspension mode yet quieten down the exhaust. Good times ahead!

I am probably going to buy one soon because the one I had made by you know who shouldn't cause so much low end drone I don't think it's scavenging either probably because the shape of the X is off. Problem is all of that wasted stainless steel

I had larini non valved boxes on that very car when I owned it about 6 years ago and took them off after 3 weeks. The drone at 2.5k was unbearable.

Subsequently on other GS/4200's have gone H or X pipe then on Mr Pea's GS got decat pipes which with the X pipe sounds epic as Mr Pea will no doubt testify.

I haven't fitted the one I got of Benny yet.
Think I will get it fitted when I get MOT done, and Air Filter

I just have an X pipe on mine, otherwise all is standard. It gives a lovely rasp on start up and in higher revs going through the gears. Otherwise sounds the same as standard.

I had a 4200 with standard system a number of years ago and always thought it too muted.

I now have a GS with standard valved boxes and a forum X pipe. The X pipes lend some pops and crackles, especially as you come down the box, but it's definitely more noticeable with the valves open. With standard 4200 boxes (permanently closed) it might be a bit disappointing.

Mine has primary cat delete with 100 cell race cats, x pipe and GS boxes with working valves

With the valves open it is very very loud and with the closed it is still loud and does not drone at all.

I also have a BMC air filter which came with the car and a formula dynamics "Engine Control Module" with an eco mode (returns ~23mpg at 70mph) and peak bhp mode that I can switch between. I filled up with Shell 100 octane in Austria last week and the car felt stupidly fast pulling on slip roads and overtaking - I appreciate horse power gains are not huge but it is all about the driving feel with the engine being super responsive under throttle

Larini sell "race pipes" which is a decat section and I believe there are some used for sale on here if they will fit your car (remember that some cars have the 4 cat set up and most facelift cars have cats in the manifolds/headers)
