Spyder first impressions

Picked up my Spyder gt manual a week ago, having owned a 4200 gt 15 years ago I thought I knew what to expect. It’s a 2002 Classico low mileage under 30k paid £20k. There’s only 65 RHD worldwide 40 UK of which 20 are still taxed so hopefully won’t depreciate too much. It’s last owner had it 15 years and was maintained by McGrath every other year which is fine by me and it’s had a new clutch but not heater matrix which worries me.
First impressions are that is still as raw, visceral and exciting as I remember, the engine is a peach and feels like a chained tiger waiting to be unleashed. The gearbox is fine once warm much easier to get into 2nd than some Ferrari’s I remember. Slightly disappointed with the high bite point of the clutch considering it was changed only a few thousand miles ago perhaps a little more use as they are self adjusting.
What I wasn’t expecting was the wallowy ride and terrible scuttle shake, it’s slightly better with the roof up but that defeats the point of a convertible. I now know the original ones had a softer setup so to remedy this I have bought some later model ARBs which are thicker (trying to keep things as stock as possible) being powder coated at present, and will lower the ride height to suit the later specs with new bushes. I’ve also ordered the cross brace for the transmission tunnel which the jury’s out on whether it helps but can’t do any harm.
I have also bought some larini sport cats but haven’t fitted yet as it’s got straight through tailpipes which I love the look of and tone but are a little too loud any recommendations without spending a fortune?
I have done the focal speaker upgrade which is worthwhile but the systems not great.
I have the sticky button issue and have done the air vents so far with goo gone but its quite a job, any advice on the buttons or replacement would be appreciated.

Tbh I wouldn’t worry about the heater matrix till the day it goes.
The clutch pedal action seems to be the first part of the travel, to bleed it it needs to fully return to max out position. Mine bites near the top. I think the scuttle shake improved over the years of production, I’m a bit of a slow driver so don’t really cause a problem for me, mine’s a 2003 model with the glass window, not sure if there any improvement by that time but 2004/05 were improved.
Enjoy your car, it looked immaculate when I saw it in 2018.

Congratulations, sounds like a great car.

I have a Spyder of exactly the same vintage, CC not GT though. I got used to the scuttle shake; I was aware it was an issue before buying. After a couple of months I stopped noticing it. I do find it is worse in Sport mode so I’d hesitate stiffening up the suspension until you’ve had some time to get used to it, but obviously up to you.

I really like the ride as standard on mine. I think I might be unusual given many of the comments on the forum. Up in Yorkshire just recently it really seemed to flow on those winding hilly A roads. It’s not good for a track but the car weighs 1700kg so that’s alright by me.

I’ve had no heater matrix problems so far

Best of luck and I hope you enjoy it.

Love that! It's why I love mine so much.
I have read that there was some strengthening done to the scuttle area in addition to the tunnel cross brace. Mine is a 2003 with the added features, and shake is much reduced. The cross brace has large (app. 10mm) holes where the 6mm bolts go. I cut hardened washers down to fit the holes, and take up the slop. I think it helps.
Keep us posted.

My '02 was recently used in a review - apparently worst scuttle shake ever encountered......... but supposedly mine is the same as ever one elses - I just try and avoid rough roads but generally fail!

I had one and you do get used to it. Drove mine mainly in France where the roads are better and it was a joy. Fit an X pipe on it to complete the experience.

Fitting the later X brace makes little difference.

The GranSport and Anniversary Spyders are solid and when on a ramp you can see why. The sills have extra box section running down them.

I have larini cats yet to fit but it’s loud enough already as it’s got straight through rear boxes which I’d like to quieten a little.
I would be really interested to see/read the exact changes made to later models as I don’t remember there being a problem on my 2003 4200, hopefully the changes I’m making will make a difference however small.106030

All convertibles shake, they used to say Saab 9-3s were the worst but after a little you stop noticing it

As the saying goes with Italian sports cars you are buying the engine and gearbox, the bodywork you get for free!

Thanks for the info, what I’m trying to ascertain is there anything that can be retrofitted to bring a 2002 up to 2003 spec? Other than the Arb’s and cross brace that I have bought

Hi, congrats on your Spyder. I bought a 2002 earlier this year and like you at first found the scuttle shake very noticable/disconcerting. After some time I've just got used to it and accept it as part of the car, it really doesn't bother me now. The engine pretty much makes up for a lot!
