Ok lots of us on here don't have new cars but its getting scary... You wont even get to chuck your car around your favorite roundabout without it cutting out which is even worse, and dangerous!

This is technology being applied to fix a problem that's not technology related. Many of the motoring safety "advances" are done because the alternative, of improving driving standards, is too difficult and doesn't put money in the right pockets.

Providing I can override it by putting my foot down - it won’t affect me

Just saw this.
From July 6, 2022, cars will be fitted with speed limiters. This applies to any new cars produced after that date, rather than any current cars on the road. The driver can override the system, but the police can access the data from them in the event of a crash. The box records speed, braking and steering positions in the lead up to any accident.

It’s only, so far, to be fitted to any new models ‘type approved‘ for the EU market after July 2022 Is how I understand it. So basically cars not on sale yet, because if something can be bought/ordered today it will already have been type approved before being put on sale.

However, from 2024 ALL new cars sold have to have this nonsense device fitted, even if they were type approved years earlier, ie all cars currently on sale. Buy an MC20 today, or before 2024 and it won’t be fitted, buy one in 2024 and the dealer won’t be able to sell you one unless it has the limiter fitted. So basically it’s 2024 that is the end of being able to buy a new drivers car that you’ll actually want to drive. Sure, it says you can ‘override’ the system by ‘pressing down hard’ on the throttle. How utterly cr@p will the throttle response be with electronics constantly trying to fight your throttle input. Electronic bongs and flashing lights very few seconds no doubt if you are marginally over a limit, anywhere, at any time of day. Followed by reduction of engine power if you fail to drop within the posted limit. Awesome.

If this relies on limit data of the kind which is displayed on sat navs then some serious updates are required. 40 and 50 limits around here are displayed on Nat speed limit sections - a left over from roadworks, I think. Some time ago there were clear sections of the M4 labelled as 50. Could be like hitting a brick wall while someone unrestricted behind you mounts your rear end.

Agree, my Volvo Sat Nav has the road past a local school labelled as 60, when it's a 30 and that is just one example.
