Sorry many questions - some issues I found on the 2009 GTS

Sorry guys, once I start to post... Can't stop :)

I have now had the car for about a week... Found a few minor issues:

1. There is a very brief metallic clattering noise when I start the engine in the morning... Only lasts around 5 seconds. Not sure what is causing it, although it is very minor.

2. I found a big gap between the front cover and the edge of the steering wheel. I could even see inside the steering whelk through this gap. Again, while it is minor, I wondered if it is due to the fact that airbag was deployed before? When I asked the Graypaul dealer, I was reassured that the car has never had a car accident before and they had checked the car thoroughly before putting it up for sale. Unfortunately I could not even check the history, before the VIN can not be found on a few websites.

3. Th sound system, although not used very often at all, seems to have a few issues. The only function working is the radio and the AUX. The CD, USB, and jukebox function all disabled in the configuration/setting menu.

4. I found several of the nuts securing the engine cover are almost 'round', I think it will not be easy to unscrew some of these.

5. Th passenger seat seems to have a mind of its own, for the comfort access, it would sometimes move forward and move back again to its original position.

6. Not an issue, but just to share my thoughts on Supaguard. A lot of people said that this is a wast of money, but I got the dealer throwing in Supaguard in and out for free. I can definitely say that the paint just feels so silky smooth and much easier to clean, so I can definitely see the benefits of having it applied.

Anyway, the dealer has agreed to sort out all these for me, and will come and pick up my car and leave me with another loan car while the works are being done.

Not sure if I am just being too picky, but I guess this is one of the biggest advantages of buying from a Maserati Dealer?

Apart from the minor issues, I surely am enjoying the car, just tried hard not to keep the RPM at 3000+ (being the automatic model).

SL...be picky...and the end of the day its our pride and joy and they have taken your money so you need it to be spot on.

Hi Slay.

1. I have the same problem and was told by the MD that it's normal. The engine starts with the valves open and then closes them after that initial bark into life. The noise is the valves closing but because the oil hasn't yet made it back that far / got up to pressure they rattle. Sound about right? Anyway nothing to worry about is what I was told (under warranty at the time so there was loot there for the dealer if they had thought it was something to deal with). I'd like to know if newer cars do it, too. Can anyone comment?

2. Please can you send a picture?

3 and 4. The dealer should fix these.

5. Mine is also posessed. I had the dealer exorcise it (or "reset" as they call it) a while back and it's been much improved since then, but still prone to Linda Blair-like outbursts.

6. I had mine done but could probably have spent the money better on a detailer. As yours was inclusive, good to get it done but otherwise not worth it.

Which dealer did you get it from?

/Adam

Hi Adam,

Yes, spot on about the metallic noise when first started the engine. As I had a loan car from them for about 6 weeks, I was able to compare with the Gran Cabrio Sport, it definitely was not like that when new-ish. So. I am going to be picky and demand the car to be spot on... As Andy said, be picky given that we have spent the money on our pride and joy, lets see if the dealer can get it fixed. I am just a bit concerned about the steering wheel, does it look like it was deployed which caused the outer edge to change shape, and therefore the gap shown in the photo?

Exactly !!

I will be insisting that they change it, my concern is whether or not this gap was caused by airbag deploying - i.e. must be quite a serious accident to have the airbag deployed. I had a good look but could not see any obvious sign of any accident repairs.

Can anyone comment on the state of the steering wheel and the possibility of the damage caused by accident?

Thanks.

The thing is, its been checked over by some one, why is it being allowed to be put up for sale in that condition?

To be fair, it was not obvious and I did not notice when I picked up the car. It was not until the second day when I was checking out the car in details when I found all these issues, although minor.

I was quite impressed with the service from Graypaul until then, just showed that how much efforts they put in to prepare the car ! That is why I would probably get a second opinion to ensure the car was not invovled in a car accident before. I will reject the car if it turns out to be accident damaged.

Thanks.

Oooppss....sorry Slay, should have checked further back that you'd bought it and were just lining up those minor issues to get addressed, nevertheless, checking/telling prospective buyers that the car has NOT been accident damaged is a biggy, not a minor issue.......just my 5 cents

Were such a thing to have been said, and to transpire not to have been true, it would be a fundamental misrepresentation.

This would entitle you, if the misrepresentation were made either fraudulently or negligently, to 'rescind' the contract: effectively handing back the car and getting your money back, together with damages, essentially your consequential losses for all the mucking about.

If made innocently, you have the choice either to rescind the contract, or to seek damages instead - a useful measure would probably be the value of the car in the condition that was represented to you, as opposed to the value of the car with (for example) a history of an incident that caused an airbag to deploy.

Good luck!

It doesn't look great and I would certainly ask them to correct it.

I don't think the airbag has deployed, I think it rips through the panel, not around it. Had it deployed you would be in no doubt.

As an aside airbags can go off for reasons other than impact. I know Alfa dealers are very careful to leave the car untouched for fifteen minutes before hooking up the battery after disconnection. Reconnecting it before all the systems have drained down can cause the airbags to pop.

Steering wheel - yeah, that ain't right. Mine has a gap of about 7mm round there, and looks like what I'd expect it to look like. The gap is just slightly bigger towards the middle, but so slight even with my most particular OCD head on I'm not remotely troubled by it. Regarding previous accident damage, I always get paranoid about that with cars I've just bought. If the MD says it's never been in an airbag-deploying bash and there are no signs of any accident damage I'd be inclined to trust them, 95% of the time. But do have a really close look for paint lines where it could have been masked under the bonnet, around lights, windows frames, vents, grill etc etc. My guess is you just have a **** wheel and it needs replacing.

Rattle on startup. I listed to mine today. The sequence is: a) ROAR, b) quick rattle (about 1/2 to 1 sec), c) glorious rumble.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

Thanks guys for the ideas and suggestions.

Yes, all the issues can be resolved by repair or replace the defective items, but if the car was actually involved in an accident with airbag deployed, I am definitely sending the car back! As Adam said, I am inclined to trust the Graypaul dealership on this one - 95% confident that they have told me the truth ... I don't think they would risk ruining their reputation over one single transaction! But for a piece of mind, I am tempted to have the car independently inspected for any prior accident damages. Any recommendations? How much would RAC charge?

I have asked the dealer to provide me with a detailed vehicle inspection report when they did the check.

One more thing guys, can you find your GT's VIN on those vehicle history check websites? i did check mine on those websites and all came back saying the VIN provided was invalid... Very strange.

Not sure how I bloody missed the gap on the steering wheel, must be drunk listening to the exhaust note !

Thanks.
