As a couple of others have said a Freelander sounds perfect for you? Get the old petrol rover engine with a head gasket change, done.

The Suzukis have always been quite capable and annoy the LR's for this fact.

Heres a left field suggestion for you.....Lada Niva, dont laugh, very, very good off road.

Suzuki Jimnys are great little off roaders, bought one a number of years back for my daughters to learn some basic driving at 16 in the paddock, I hung on to it after they passed their tests and used it as a little run about, proper little miniature off roader, I'm sure the little known Lada is probably a good one too

Too expensive, and over valued.
Dealer who had the auto Pinin had 52 Range Rovers for sale, yes fifty two, and he was saying how bad the chassis defenders and discoveries are for rot, and he often sends early 2000 models to auction that he has no chance of getting an MOT/not cost viable to repair, due to chassis rot.
He was saying a lot of the LR90's on the road shouldn't be, bodged up, silly inflated prices.

I tend to agree with chassis and rot, but there is simply nothing apart from the landcruiser that comes close to a defender for proper off roading, I've owned a few 110's and 90's. Simple to repair no silly electronics to go wrong, if you find a good un you wouldn't regret it and hold their values well.
if money no object get a Twisted Defender;)

Doubt you could get a defender for a decent price.

Plus even if you did it would probably be stolen in a week.

They are in high demand.

Matt's right, actually. I used to go green-laning (Landy 110 V8) with a bloke who had a Niva. The rest of us were in Landies, Rangies with the front and back cut off to reduce overhang and similar bashed up unstoppable machines. We all took the pi5s, but that Nova always made it through. That was around 2000, and it wasn't a new one then. The only thing it couldn't do as well was tow something heavy out of a hole, but only because it didn't have the weight.

Is your glass half-empty, or do you live in the ghetto? Mind you, I agree re your first point - they're silly money now.

Freelanders don't have a transfer box, not much better than a 4x4 car apart from the ground clearance.

Just thinking there is a Landy near me up for sale. Used for off roading I assume as roll bars and all the gear fitted. It is up for £4250. It is the 2 seater whatever that is and I think it was a G Reg. The guy is an auto electrician and runs a 110 and two rangies.

The ghetto of London.

They are in demand and hence why they are being stolen on demand!
