Small 4x4's and MOT history

I'm after a small, cheap, 4x4.
Something to knock around locally, bit of green laneing, use instead of the BMW in poor weather etc.
Wanting something with true off road capability, and also petrol.
There actually isn't much choice, for you immediately scrub off all the soft off roaders like the Rav4, CRV's, Freelander etc.
Suzuki Jimny, just a bit too small, then I came across the Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin...
The 3 door a nice size, from very late 90's to 2006, the sweet spot 2001/2 when it had the a proper transmission with 2wd/4wd/4wd diff locked and 4wd low ratio gearbox. From 2003 they cost cut the 3 door range and it was just permanent 4wd but no low ratio gearbox, just like the rest of them.
I've seen 3 in the last few days, from the NW down to the Midlands all around £2K.
First one was a skip, second one an auto and high miles, evidence of lots of welding underneath.
I thought I had cracked it today with the third.
49K miles, fully stamped service history, very clean, even the a/c worked.
MOTed only 4 weeks ago, no advisories in fact basically no serious advisories at all on the MOT checker for the last 12 years.
Thought I would get my torch and have a quick look underneath.
Immediately put my hand through one of the jacking points, and tapping one of the rear suspension locating brackets with my knuckles, a hole the size of a 50p suddenly appeared.
Gutted.
It would have been impossible for any MOT checker to miss such corrosion, especially on a lift.
Dealer just shrugged his shoulders. 'guess we will have to get it repaired IF we still have it in 12 months time'....

Friend of mine had a Pinin a couple of years ago. They rust for run so most will have been welded.
I wouldn’t bother with one personally.

He’s got a V6 Petrol Vitara now and that’s pretty good.

I’ve got a 1996 4.2L Landcruiser that I roll around in. It’s a proper off-roader but finding a unabused one is difficult and costly.

I bought a pinin, kept it three months, just too slow, wallowy, and rusted as others have said. Looked nice, silver with red leather, just not for me.

defender 90 all the way

Too expensive, and over valued.
Dealer who had the auto Pinin had 52 Range Rovers for sale, yes fifty two, and he was saying how bad the chassis defenders and discoveries are for rot, and he often sends early 2000 models to auction that he has no chance of getting an MOT/not cost viable to repair, due to chassis rot.
He was saying a lot of the LR90's on the road shouldn't be, bodged up, silly inflated prices.

I feel at the moment it's impossible to buy one that hasn't got any tin worm.

The Vitara is a bit too feminine, if you know what I mean!
Lancruisers and Merc G Wagons are again just silly prices.

I wouldn't dismiss the gaylander straight away. I had one as a site engineer a few years ago and it was very capable both on and off road with some aggressive tyres fitted - plus they don't rot and are available in 4 pot or v6 petrol format for peanuts

4.0l Jeep Wrangler?
Had the 4lt Limited Wrangler back in the 90's, the leaf strung YJ model. Lovely with moss green paint and soft beige leather.
Have you seen the price of those too? Crazy. Would have another but not at the money people are asking, they are wanting the same money I bought mine for 20 years ago!

Not sure what you mean by “proper 4x4”

The Panda beat many 4x4s in tests they have done and can be very economical in twinair form or 1.3 diesel

I seriously like them and all over you tube you have them outdoing expensive new suvs off road

The Panda 4x4 is more capable than you might think, I wouldn't ignore it.

LR Chassis are prone to rust but there are good ones out there and a complete chassis swap is not the most difficult job in the world, look for one that has been done recently. Freelanders have decent 4WD system so are also good off road.

Landcruisers, Shoguns and most Jeeps have decent off road capabilities

By proper 4x4 I refer to it having a low ratio transfer box.
Most of the Rav4 type vehicles don't, including the Land Rover Freelander.
They are fine for a bit of snow or muddy field, but I'm after a bit of proper offloading capability.
Years back there was the likes of the Daihatsu Fourtrak, Sportrak, Isuzu Trooper etc but they are all mostly bake bean cans now.
Lada Riva, yes, very capable, but again a thing of the 80's!
I am tempted by a Jeep Cherokee (box shape) or Grand Cherokee pre '06, but really bigger than I want.
That's why I was attracted to the Pinin, *** reliability, compact 3 door, low ratio transfer box, but rot is the problem. There are a few late registered ones which look good, but as said, they ditched the nice gearbox for a simpler cheaper permanent 4 unit, but no low box capability.
