Awesome car and with winter continental SportContacts on,,, will handle anything a Yorkshire winter will throw at it….

And absolutely a hoot to drive…..

The Jimny is just bit to small inside and out, plus Anna dislikes them. Are they based on the older 410 / 413, which did look quite unstable?
The big proper 4x4 likely make more sense but just feel like overkill.
Seems we have moved on from towing duties to full on horsebox / lorry :-|

Do you need a 4x4

From the snow tests I've seen in order worst to best it was
FWD on summer tyres
4WD on summer tyres
FWD on winter tyres
4WD on winter tyres

There's a test on YouTube where they took cars up an indoor ski slope

did winter drive in my 3200GT on summer tyres (Pzero Corsa :cool: ). and was totally wired after 12 mile journey.
Had to go back later to collect daughter from school disco.

My Jag is not generated in snow - monster rear tyres and huge torque, auto and RWD.

I use it anyway, acquired some “snow socks” a few years back but never needed them, pick my route home carefully as I live at the top of a hill.

#Warning# Thread Drift - now looking at cheap and huge 4x4. Looking at the L322 Range Rover with 4.4 *petrol engine. Know the diesel makes more sense, but ready the URL above ^^^
Anyone have direct experience? Can see usual issues include <everything> but particularly
  • air suspension
  • CEL - for many reasons
  • injectors
  • rusty underneath


*Want to avoid a leggy diesel because any petrol V8 would be a nice project to rebuild / transplant than 166,000 miles of burnt chip fat.

A Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ) series with the 4lt straight six.
The V8 nice but the truck straight six probably more reliable.
You do see them with LPG conversations for sale on occasion.
Good luck with a L322 being reliable.

Thanks - been looking at previous Jeep Cherokee XJ on the basis it was tough. Is the replacement WJ Grand Cherokee similar running gear then?

I'm not an expert on Jeeps, although I did own a '93 4lt Wrangler limited in the late 90's.
The XJ Cherokee and WJ Grand Cherokee ran at the same time.
The Grand Cherokee was grander and bigger and had full time 4wd when the XJ Cherokee did not.
The 4lt was the same between them, the V8 was only available in the Grand Cherokee.

L322 are very age dependent, we had a 55 plated diesel and it cost the warranty company over £16k in two years, air suspension, steering column, LCD dash amongst other stuff but it was fantastic . We now have an 09 5.0 Petrol and touchwood other than normal running it has cost us very little, even lost money on the warranty. Quality improved around 07 / 08 look on the forums you will find the change date.

We also had a 4.4 P38 which lifted its liners at 170k, common problem, but we only gave £650 for it did 20k in 12 months and sold it with a knackered engine for £950

They are great cars and everytime we think of getting rid we just can't do it, if we did I am sure a latter model would take its place
