Some of them early cd's (a copy of Bella Donna by Stevie Nicks springs to mind) were terrible which even my ears could work out how bad they were but they have come on leaps and bounds.
Do you remember Den when people use to decorate hedgegrows on the side of roads with tape? Normally come about after you re-winded Jimmy Page's guitar solo on Stairway To Heaven too many times.

I lost a girlfriend once in a cassette-hedgerow incident. She was bitching about whatever I was playing (in about 1980), so I ejected the cassette and threw it out of the window as we drove along. She thought that was totally unreasonable behaviour and dumped me.

Had a girl threaten to make me stop the car and let her out if I wouldn't change whatever I was listening to at the moment. I think it may have been Methods of Mayhem's first album. She figured I'd oblige her, since we were on our way to dinner; it was our second or third date; and we were about 10 miles from her house. I still wonder, from time to time, if she ever made it home...

Bizzare mate , That was breaking the boundaries in that era , I think the minimum requirement for police to leave the station now is a stabbing , and then it has to be at least 3 inches deep lol

Finally have some of my new (old) kit up and running.
Tom Evans PSU on the floor, a pair of Michell Alecto monoblocks, one each side of the Naim streamer, with the Michell Argo on the top.
All working nicely.
Just the Michell Transcriptor turntable and Trichord phonostage to add, once an appropriate rack/shelf has been built. (The Naim frame shown is too shallow to fit the turntable.)

Bet Mrs Ewan loves all those black boxes and trailing wires!

Ha!
It’s all out of sight behind a sofa. That’s one of the rules!
Once I’ve had a bespoke rack/shelf built, it’ll be better, and all the wires will be re-routed and hidden.
I’ve commissioned a boat-builder friend to design and make a more stylish housing for it all, which will largely be in in glass (or Acrylic) and stainless steel, to match the turntable.

Here’s what it looks like in daylight currently. A bit messy, especially with that chunky Naim Fraim thing. It’s still work-in-progress.33AC1A3A-6DD8-42DA-98F3-90EF7482A841.jpeg

Bit of a swap around. The turntable came back today, serviced and with the new cartridge fitted. Took away the Naim Fraim as well.
So, still messy and work in progress, but at least vinyl is back on the menu2B7BD6C2-C255-4F04-9DB0-5651B8F5ACA2.jpeg

Back in the land of the peasants

On Facebook last week a guy advertised a Harmon Kardon 330C tuner amp for £20

He's had it decades but as it needed a service and a re-cap he'd decided to let it go to a new home so I drove over and picked it up

Gave it to my hifi guy who loves a challenge, new caps and a test run, got it back today

As he handed it over he said, I really don't want to give this back

Set it up and HK didn't skimp, not only does it look good it sounds absolutely fantastic

It sits atop my hifi test rig of many boxes 20230322_184849.jpg

It's very 1976

What makes me laugh is my speaker cables are about 5mm dia but the connections are press fit, on the HK so you can only get about 20 strands through the hole

What is that on top of it? I can’t zoom in enough to see on my phone, but whatever it is, I’m loving the shape, and the knobs.

As for the HK, at least you won’t need any lamps on in that room. Awesome!

It's a pre amp, home made, I think the guy that made it was related to Gerry Anderson, it's very stingray
