Yeah, it's pretty cool

View attachment 76840

Original Chariots of Fire poster on the wall. Soon to be joined by a triptych of No Time To Die with varying dates on them :D

Oh and Nikita (sadly a US poster, but there we are)

Star war trilogy - good choice
Red dwarf the smeg ups - good choice
Oceans eleven - fair enough
Dune ? Not so sure on that one :lol2:
Visuals were good but was a box office flop.

P0rn collection must be in the first left shelf as you didnt want us to see it.

Oooh sorry, missed that chap.

Things have moved on a bit, and it depends on what your budget it to a large extent. I'd get myself to a decent HiFi emporium and start listening.

From memory we had B+W 601s and moved on pretty sharpish. Monitor Audio GR10s as they were, were a revelation. Amazing speakers for stands (again at the time, but that was 15 years back) I'd have no issues looking at their current offering, and this is why (as I had them) we built the cinema around them (in the last house it was in the living room with a pull down screen). Scored the GR60s on ebay, and they are lovely but never used them for music.

The Viennas are another thing altogether. Mine are ex-demo and a few years old now, but the most amazing things. I still find myself thinking there's an engine running outside. The bass extension is simply barking low. But they are still £2.5k on ebay....

If you can find some to demo, you really should try some transmission line speakers. Maybe PMC?

I picked up a pair of IMF “The Studio” earlier this year, and after swapping out the capacitors and resistors on the crossovers, they sound bloody marvellous. They’re 50 years old!

They play down to 25Hz and put it this way, I don’t need to use my REL sub with them!

I've got a pair of TDL studio 0.5s bought new with my first redundancy check back in 1990! (once I'd score a new job that is). Not quite as venerable as your IMF from which the TDLs are decended. I've had to replace the woofer twice. The first time I upgraded to the metalic cones used in the rarer 0.75s after TDL ceased to exist, and then more recently to a modern woofer which, to me, has improved the sound no end.

Thanks

I have always lusted after Viennas, but I wouldn't want such low bass extension. I'm in a upstairs bedroom and in a terraced house. I think what with the new 60kg sub downstairs, I should be a little more considerate of my neighbours!

Given how old the rest of the HiFi kit is (and I've no intention of upgrading, except for the amp), I'm quite keen to keep it retro (if late 90's/early 00's is retro) but...and very importantly... beautiful.

I loved the B&W 601 S2 with the yellow Kevlar cones.
I loved the Viennas with their stunning (i presume real) wood cabinets.

I might keep the hunt for some old stunning KEFs, Monitor Audios or other... I am considering small towers simply because they seem to be cheaper than bookshelfs second hand. Though bookshelfs would make more sense if I was to ever "re-purpose" them as an upgrade to the cinema.

I also have a pair of Linn Kabers, which I pair with a period REL (Storm) Sub, but to be fair, even on their own they do sound rather nice. Can usually be found pretty inexpensively on eBay.

Unlikely in honesty. Wood is a bit on the resonant side. Probably veneered MDF

Wish I was in the market for this gear. Only stylish items allowed in the house, but I can slouch around in my pants while Anna is out. Sonos dotted around which are adequate for normal use. Right now 6music are doing rocktober or metal month. I can shout louder than than a pair of sonos 3 at full tilt playing toxicity. Need more guts to drown out my own voice.
Maybe once my garage / barn is rebuilt with 1st floor man cave.

Meant to reply earlier. Dune was awesome, who cares if it was a flop. Helps if you'd read the book though (apparently, according to my unscientific survey)

P0rn is on the server, like any self respecting technophile has ;)

Keep thinking about an LP12 but mate just bought a Rega Planer 6 and it is very good and a bit more stylish to pass the "does it look nice" that Mrs Z has for anything that goes in the lounge (me excluded of course) but I know that purchase will be the first cost as I will then start buying all the vinyl I sold years ago

Personally I wouldn't go down the Linn LP12 route, both my father and I had them and both moved away and never looked back. I currently have an Pink Triangle Anniversary that was rebuilt and modified by its original designer a few years ago and it remains one of the best turntables I have ever heard in its current form. I also have a Voyd "The Voyd" and the plan is once things are back on track to get this fettled too and find a Helius Omega arm for it and then see how it compares to the PTA.

For a stylish alternative I know someone who rebuild Townshend Rock turntables and can finish them in any automotive colour (he will only use a colour once) so how about a Rock rebuilt and painted to match the SZ?
