My understanding of this has always been that the same unit supports both Apple Carplay and Android Auto, with the only difference being that you use a different cable. My understanding is also that the requirement for a hard wired interface is purely an Android Auto restriction and not something related to the Naviplus. The factory system in my Ford Mondeo (Sync 3) certainly works like this - it supports either, but Android Auto definitely needs a cable.

I would assume if they're making a change to the unit to support Android Auto without a USB connection, then there must have been a change to the Android Auto specification. I'll have a dig around.

Ok, I am getting a unit on test, stand by with un update in about 2 weeks.

I think this will be a better solution long run so maybe all this fanny'in about will be worth it.

Ok so the dongle explained:

64753

You install the android box in the car running an Android system and connect it to the screen.

The above dongle then plugs into that box then your phone cable into the usb part of it.

The dongle contains the software for both CarPlay and Android Auto, just think of it as an app on an SD card.

There is also a Bluetooth version for CarPlay only so its the same as above but with no USB socket to plug your phone cable into as it connects wirelessly.

Hope that makes sense.

Just checked, and it appears that Android Auto has been updated to no longer require a USB connection. However, in place of that it does require a Wi-Fi connection. I think I'll stick with plugging my phone in for now.

You can connect to the Android unit over BT or Wifi with this new box. Its proven to work so there are no issues.

I'm definitely in for the newer version. Much of a price difference? Is it the same spec? I'm also happy to be a guinea pig. I'm pretty au fait with vehicle electrics and electronics.

I thought I’d mention that there is an uprated version of the actual overlay screen available. It is far more touch sensitive (you no longer need to press firmly on the icon) and doesn’t reflect sunlight which the original one is known to do. Paul from Prestige ordered one for me and fitted it on Friday.

Well - that's both good and bad. Both of those things annoy me about my current install. It often takes me 5 or 6 swipes to activate the system and the sunlight reflection is extremely annoying in a convertible.

Can I ask how much that cost - Supply and fit? Prestige fitted my original unit.

£100 for the screen. £30 labour.

Thanks for that. How did you find out about this - the Naviplus website and their ebay page is massively out of date. It still references using the hang-up button to activate. No mention of swipe activation, no mention of the no-usb version and no mention of the improved screen.

I bought my set off a forum member and when Paul came round to install it we realised that the overlay screen was cracked. Paul mentioned an uprated screen so I asked him to order one.
