hi again,
I have few questions: (sorry for my poor English)
  1. any feedback from somebody who already installed the kit?
  2. on a GT-S '08, what parts of the dashboard/interior have to be unmount?
  3. when do you think you'll be able to ship the kit?
  4. I'm very interested in a front camera. I saw the @Prestige post that mention that it's not a good idea. Although, has anybody done it? Is it technically feasible? how would you install it?

Many thanks
David

  1. I have twice and its awsome in my opinion
  2. You will get a full instruction guide but basically its quite involved. You have to remove the centre consul, nav and centre consul, glovebox and steering cowl
  3. I will probably place the order in the next 4 weeks and it takes 4 weeks to arrive
  4. We do not supply a front camera solution but as you point out, Paul does.

If you are unsure about your capabilities, pay the £200 and get Paul to install it then he can discuss any extras you might want pre install.

Paul installed my kit two weekends ago and I've had a bit of use (including about 6 hours behind the wheel) of the system now. Firstly a big thank you to Matt for setting this up - it's a great offering - and to Paul & Warren for installing it. It's certainly a lot of labour and even on my car (a QP, same as Devonboy's) there were various issues above and away that Paul had to sort. He took the time to do it and do it properly which we all know is rare.

Thoughts on the system:
  • Remember it's not the latest iPad - the touch response is a bit laggy and requires more force than we are used to. Probably not so dissimilar to older iPhones. I guess you could always upgrade the overlay screen but like everything there's always a better option out there. I'm happy with mine.
  • I was initially getting rather a lot of screen 'flicker' - almost like there's a bad feed/connection. Paul's advice was to restart my phone and that seemed to clear it. He said that it is nothing specific to our cars and even an OEM CarPlay installation will do the same thing - if you've got a lot of background apps running or the phone hasn't been reset in a while
  • the cameras we have aren't the best and I fear mine has died; they basically came free with the kit so I'm not complaining! I know others who have put cameras on their car and the same thing happens after a few jet washes etc. Paul is going to install a new camera (of his supply) later this summer when we can find a time. For those of you who also have issues, the fault I'm experiencing is a 'No Input' message that pops up 75%-80% of the time when the car goes into reverse and therefore no picture. The system is definitely on the right input and Paul said the connections shouldn't be broken - such a fault is most likely to be a broken camera
Goodness my car seems to be getting a lot of love all of a sudden, it's in with Voicey this week for it's 4 year service, cam cover gaskets, air con compressor and various odds and ends. Thank goodness the rust hasn't gotten to the underneath (it lives outside) but a proper Waxoyl et al is the next project

The carplay system seems to connect through the auxiliary port. I currently use the auxiliary port for a Bluetooth adapter to connect my phone to play music and talk.

Will I need to get some sort of splitter to run the Bluetooth as well or is there a Bluetooth receiver within the carplay system?

You can get a twin splitter for the headphone jack but I had the same dilemma. I just did away with the old cables as the new kit does it all better so there is no requirement to retain it.

I'll soon begin my attempt at installing the system, and based on Paul's pre-loom photo, I'm assuming that the connectors circled in red are not used.

Is this correct?

Blox visited my place in Portsmouth a couple of weeks ago for a dual install by Paul from Prestige. Firstly, can’t recommend Paul highly enough - prompt, flexible and a real nice guy to boot.

Initial reactions to the system:

Touch-screen - As Wagon-Lits stated earlier, it’s not the most responsive - but it’s manageable.

Sat-nav - fantastic! Waze, Apple Maps and Google maps all work flawlessly, hurrah!

Radio - I’m a 5-Live listener, which is only usually available on DAB (not in a Granturismo) or medium wave (terrible quality). Now I can receive 5-Live in crystal clear quality using ‘Tune-in Radio’ MOST of the time. Sometimes it cuts out - presumably when there is no 3/4G. Doesn’t beat the exhaust sound in Sport mode though

Reversing camera - it works, so that’s good. Not the best quality so may upgrade the camera at some point. Paul showed me how to do it and it’s a doddle

Bluetooth - still terrible. Nobody can hear me on calls, even though I am now completely bypassing the factory system. Will try a change of microphone. Shure make a (very expensive) noise cancelling unit so will report back. Can anybody else recommend a solution?

Charging - I now have a USB cable in the glovebox, which is great. The cable will break at some point, as they all do. Paul showed me how to take off the footwell panel to replace it.

Fitting costs - £200. £45 for the harness. £20 each for Paul’s travel from St Albans

All in all, I’m delighted with the system and the car feels more modern as a result.

Great to meet Blox, too. Although his car looked nicer than mine so slightly envious

I managed to have a good chat with Paul @Prestige yesterday about installing the system at my place...
It works better for him if he can do two jobs in the same day (to help make it worth his while travelling).
I'm based in Derby (i.e. the Midlands); is anyone else happy to buddy up for the installation? Even if you're not in the Midlands, e.g. Manchester, this would still 'halve' the distance compared with travelling all the way to St. Albans where Paul is based.
Saturdays/Sundays look like the best bet. (Although Sundays work better for me.) He even performs the work on the car of the person that has had to travel first, so that they can get away earlier rather than having to hang around at someone else's place all day!
... Any takers?

I'd be interested in an installation in Derby if you're prepared to wait a while - I've not got my unit yet as I'm lined up for the second batch of orders.

Hi @PaulL Thanks for replying. I can potentially wait, but it kind of depends on if anyone else (from the 1st batch, who already have their units) is interested, and also how long it will be before your unit arrives...
@conaero Are the 2nd batch units still due to arrive end of June? Or are you planning on waiting until all 25(?) slots are filled before ordering them?

Cheers,
T

While I am potentially interested, I'm in (far) South-West Shropshire - so Derby's not that much closer than St Albans. It probably makes more sense for me to buddy up with someone South or West of Birmingham if they exist / probably makes more sense for you to pair up with someone a bit nearer if there is anyone.
