Skyhook warning light...

Anyone who has followed my somewhat incohesive ramblings on this forum will possibly see the irony in this....
I have speculated about suspension. As a greenhorn and technically challenged, I get these things in my head when reality is quite different perhaps..
Anyway, with FD roll bars fitted, Ive come to see the Skyhook system in a new light.
Long & short- Ive been flip flopping between the FD springs and keeping her on stock Skyhook, and dumping the aging electronics for something altogether less digital. More recently Ive been increasingly convinced by the charms of Skyhook now the roll bars are on....
Today I was treated to the Skyhook warning light however...:f5:

Is this the persuasion I need to install KW coilovers and have Skyhook disabled..?
What does collective wisdom speculate might be the cause..? A bad wire, loose connector perhaps...fried ecu ?
Does an SD2/3 reader lend the detail needed to see the problem diagnosed...?
Who thinks ploughing more money into the dodgy Italian electrics is just a bit daft in the longterm...?

Thanks for reading !

Yes you need to get it on a sd2/3

As you know our cars have the same suspension setup. On the le mans road trip I definitely tested the FD bars to their limit while keeping up with the pack down the French country lanes at unmentionable speeds.

What felt like it let the suspension down was definitely the softness in the springs... The car would go light or floaty neat the limit

That said I had the opportunity to sit in @masertel's bonkers Nitrous oxide boosted manual 4200. He has the FD bars and springs... So far I have figured the following

Stock springs/suspension height with FD arb kit - sport mode on - advantages/disadvantages/observations
Very unlikely to bottom out on undulating country roads at high speeds
Disadvantage: easy to unsettle the cars balance in high speed corners with throttle on/off and braking - definitely requires smooth driving inputs even at speed
ARB kit provides a lot more confidence and grip but there is still a vagueness to where the limit
Too easy to bring the rear round on cold tyres and overly aggressive steering input (even slowly)

FD springs
Car feels hunkered down connected to the road and not the "sky" (overall floaty feel from skyhook is gone)
They work straight out of the box vs coilover which require hours of set up
Winding down the suspension even by the minimum 25mm will make it much more likely to bottom out on the cats. Fully laden with luggage and 4 people will be bump stop territory

KW
Can choose suspension height, damping settings etc etc but requires set up to get right corner weighing and so on.
No switchable suspension but hopefully one setting that works for your needs

FD springs do seem the simpler, certainly cheaper way to go....
Probably why I have been favouring this approach more recently...
Coilovers are an unknown. People have reported rubbibf in the arches and the like...

Must have been fun in the Nitrous beast..I think masertel also has a car on coilovers...?

Hi ,

Unlikely the ECU , Skyhook issues will be the 4x shock valve coils , wheel and body accelerometers , speed reference from ABS module and of course any connections.

From memory the Skyhook ECU is the only one that when disconnected the warning light goes out.

Regards
Steve

I don't know if this helps but I've been suffering the suspension light coming on ever since I rebuilt the front end of the car. I think I've traced the fault to a bad connection in the connector block for the vertical acceleration sensor. There is a little black box attached to each front shock absorber and the wiring for these terminates in a waterproof connector just behind the brake pipe. Wiggling the wires around with the ignition on caused the suspension light to come on. It would appear that once the light comes on it's stored in the ecu so it won't go off until the ignition is turned off. Turning the ignition back on after a 10-15 second wait clears the light until it does it again. Try jacking the car up at one side or the other and wiggle the wires on the connector block. It's the one with 3 wires, the other wire, the blue one is the ABS. Give it a go it may be just as simple as that. I can't say for sure if I've fixed the fault yet but I'm fairly sure that I have.

I appreciate your comments...
Its the RH front wheel accelerator sensor....the one that bolts to the back of the hub with a couple screws...( he says, cos I havent actually found it on ES web fiche yet!) I think this is the result of translation from Italian- it is an accelerometer I presume..?

If anyone knows the diag reference or part number, I'd be grateful... guessing ES list it under something electrical, not front suspension...Logical if you're a Martian I guess....!?!

£70 delivered from Eurospares and it seems the system is happy with the replacement sensor...
Result...!
