I ve been a long time SKY customer mainly for the sports also Discovery channel and Sky Atlantic I watch a bit ,about a month ago my old HD box started playing up and I lost most of the sports channels - no signal being received and it was starting to **** me off . Happened to mention it to a neighbour and he said theres other ways of watching Sky sports wink wink . So I made the decision to cancel Sky - was costing £70 p/m for a **** service . I duly phoned Sky and surprisingly got through fairly quickly and cancelled without the usual hassle .
That was the end of that but no as expected Sky phoned and offered me the Q box - free install - full sports package for £31 p/m after some thought I thought WTF lets do it I could be like Idris with my new all singing all dancing Sky Q box - so a date was set for the installation - today - was quite excited waiting for the call from my installer - a young lady - not being sexist I thought hmm not sure - but she might be attractive - sadly not . She wanted to see the position of the dish so I took her up the back alley -sorry could nt resist it - Anyway we have this crappy extension one story virtually flat roof with a slight fall for run off - I ve been up there many times and its very safe but as it turns out its not safe at all according to Sky . No its safer up a ladder according to Sky because even though its a flat roof they cant anchor their harness or something - I started glazing over at this point I had to stop myself from using certain words but I never swear at a woman - unless shes a total ***** .
So no Sky Q for me and I ve re cancelled Sky again all because of their pathetic health and safety bollox - it did nt bother the original installer 22 years ago in fact he was pleased if I remember - how times have changed anyway I m just off to see my neighbours little black box in action nudge nudge say no more

Similar situation when they installed sky q here. We have a single storey short and narrow section of roof below the sky dish. The installers have been told they cant stand on a roof as they are then liable for any damage to tiles as well.

Tbf i offered to swap the bits over for him if it ment the install could go ahead and he said the rules stupid dont worry i will do it. Whole thing was done in 30 mins or so.

They drill a hole, in the wall for a removable bolt. They then tie the ladder into it with a ladder bracket and ratchet strap. They then wear a harness and hook themselves in to that.
I know the Company that manufactures it all and does the sky and bt training in work at height.

3 fatalities a month in UK construction due to falls from height, the majority of which are from ladders, scaffolding or through fragile roofs. It’s not a stupid, pathetic or bollox rule.

Neighbour had 4 Irish van dwellers on the roof last week, they hadn't even got a crawler ladder

I wondered what his liability would be if one of them fell off because the other 3 would be gone before he heard the thud

I've got 2 dishes on the side of my house because Sky HD man thought it was ok to put the dish on the side of the house standing on the garage roof but sky q man said no to going up there to change the LNB

We had part of our house re-rendered a few years ago and then I had Sky out to install a new dish. They told me that they’d need to drill an anchor hole into the wall, which would be the only blight on my freshly finished house. And I have kids, I let them do it but it seemed a bit much. We’re talking about a wall that’s about 8 or 9 feet high, not the steeple at a cathedral. However, I appreciate they need to be safe.

Now have a hole with a wee cap over it that at least they can (and have) reuse when required.

It’s doesn’t take much. I know someone who died after falling from about shoulder height.

I had the same anchor point drilled and fitted the last time Sky came to realign my dish, actually it was a rusty old thing too and they replaced it too so the house probably looked better for it, but seems a bit overkill since I live in a bungalow!

Late 2019 I was up a ladder fixing insulation to the inside of our vaulted kitchen ceiling ( stood about 7 feet up) the ladder slipped and I went down with it with my foot trapped in the ladder. Big to broke and completely dislocated and 2 other toes broke. Big toe pinned and 2 toes wired. I still have trouble with it now and probably always will.

All I know is when I fell from the first floor of my workshop it hurt lots and really made me think at 58 time to be more careful.

Buggers made a right mess of one wall doing that. The sky dish is now at the other end of the house but I can easily imagine that no Sky installer would ever get up there again. The roofer, the painter - even me - I reckon we'd be ok. But if that dish ever needs fixing I can be pretty certain that it won't be Sky fixing it.

I’ve no problem with contractors taking a precautionary approach to work whilst on my property. In fact insist that they do. What I have an issue with is Sky’s attitude to how it’s enforced. I had a scaffold up for decorating over my conservatory and boards down over a flat roof on an annexe. Whilst like this I asked Sky to upgrade by installation and they wouldn’t use the scaffold that was there. Insisted on drilling into my walls for ladder restraint anchors. In the end I got an independent installer to do the job for me.

It s a joke IMO when their training and H&E protocol results in all common sense being eroded - they are so fixated on - I must drill an anchor point for my ladder and harness otherwise it can t be done - even when there is a usable scaffold or safe flat roof which would be far safer than any ladder
In fact on big sites these days ladders are banned and single man scaffolds must be used that are a pain in the backside .
When I spoke to them I said why don t Sky go down the internet route like Netflix and do away with the dish - he said a lot of their customers are old and don t have internet - yeah right - I d like to see the percentages on that - I would say the type of person of any age who can afford Sky tv usually have internet as well .
Wake up Rupert you re losing customers by the thousand I would say - hope so u useless **
