I just thought I would post here this excellent site where you place a transport job and transport companies bid for your job.

I recently sent the Alfa Brera, 235 miles from Chichester to The Peak District. Its cost me £155 (plus £40 Shiply fees)

I have my guys direct contact details so could possible do our work for 66p a mile which is ludicrously cheap.

The guy that did it was excellent and I am considering approaching him to undertake the forums work as many express concerns that using indies usually involves long journeys and members don't want to put the mileage on their cars.

For example, for me to send my car to Voicey's is 100 mils so £66 each way...I think that is about the same cost as the fuel!

I recently sold a car and the chap who bought it arranged for a Shiply transporter to collect, again cheaper than driving it the 350 miles. While it would be good to have a regular contact through the forum, it is usually worth putting the details into Shiply all the time as well, because if a company is already delivering a car in that direction, then the return leg is being made anyway so anything they get for your job is profit which is why you often find one company quoting far cheaper than the others.

I'd seriously consider sending my car to London (and back) for the Le Mans trip. Adding nearly 1000 miles just commuting in the UK is an expensive business. I can fly down cheaply and fly back too so I can also cut the time away down on either side. I think the car will enjoy sucking fuel like an F-16 so it's probably £300+ of fuel there and back. For example, my house to Stansted is 378 miles so £250 one way at those prices. Spending £500 or so return saves £300 of fuel plus keeps pointless mileage off the car. I don't mind using it but don't like useless UK motorway mileage. I assume though that a Glasgow pick-up would cost more so I'd have to find a local carrier??

They are merely online broker sites. It’s entirely dependent on what the people who turn up are like. I’ve heard good and I’ve heard horror stories, and my experience with them is dreadful. For parts or similar it’s fine. Personally, when shipping cars that we sell, I would only ever use a reputable firm. They then know how to look after the cars, have the correct equipment, are fully insured and cost a good deal more. You get what you pay for...

+1 used Shiply now about 6 times. Just use common sense and research the shipper.

Absolutely. Go on the feedback over the lowest price and just make sure its a transporter and not being towed or driven and you'll be good.

The other thing to consider if it is a covered transporter. Especially when going from one end of the country to the other.
The roadworks on the M6 leave loads of dirt and stones to fly up and potential damage your pride and joy.

Presumably no more risk than if you drove it the same distance though?

I think everyone seems to be getting hung up on ifs and buts. As said it's an auction site , it works by normally allowing a shipper to find a return journey, or otherwise, fare as such, so they make a bit of money on an otherwise fruitless journey. There are all sorts on there from single man with trailer to covered transport. Just weigh up what's suitable, and book it. Being flexible on timescale also helps. I have had jobs with individuals with trailers, through to covered trailers, and nationwide big shippers. They are all on there. It's also good for big bulky furniture items etc. it's not just for cars.

Want a car collecting from Chester to Newbury but all shiply quotes are coming in at £230 plus which seems a lot based on Matts experience with the Brera.

You should also ask whoever arrives if they have the correct insurance,ie hire and reward , if they're towing with a van they'll need an operators licence and a tachograph , it seems somewhat ridiculous but if they're towing with a 4X4 they're exempt from operator licensing but still need a tachograph.

If you use a "it'll be fine m8" operation there's a chance when the DVSA stop them your car could be left on the trailer because they won't let them continue the journey.

Phil - I asked for a quote from my place in Dorset to Silverstone. It started at £230 and dropped to £195 over 3 days. But as it was, I drove it myself, with a friend following in a second car.

As it turned out, my car broke down (see “low loader” thread of shame), so I saved the fuel bill and the Shiply bill. Result!
