All the mid range sporty German saloons / coupes will do this job but functional rather than inspired choice. Lotus Evora could be a hardcore choice dependent of age / size of children, Subaru WRX etc. but I think my choice would be a Volvo V60 Polestar, normal looks on the outside but with a 350BHP sting in its ar5e

I'm having a look at the v60 Polestar to replace my XC60 which goes back in August. Everyone knows I like a Volvo! I also like the v90 in full R Design AWD mode. They can be had for 300 on a lease which is lots of car for the cash. Those v60s have been sitting at £25k for ages which bodes well for slow depreciation.

Also considering a Works Mini Cooper S. Had a few Minis and I like them a lot. I never had any insurance cost issues Rockits. In fact out 530d costs twice what the last Mini was to insure. The Volvo is cheaper than both of them to insure, I think because it has the City Safety stuff that brakes the car itself etc.

Left field choices are a QPV or another Ghibli but I agree that they will continue to depreciate which doesn't help their case.

If I was braver, i'd look at an M5 but i've heard horror stories and so would need a warranty and that makes them expensive (over 30k). The e90 m3 looks a bargain. They go through the auctions for 12-14k for an 08-10 plate one which is a lot v8 Beemer for not a lot of money really.

Choices, choices!

That’s a good option I had not considered. Is the “base” V6 sound any good? The QPVI V6 can also be had for a little over £30k... I have the feeling that those Maserati saloon will continue to depreciate a lot... only need to look at the QPV in the low teens to demonstrate i could easily lose £10k of value over a 2-3yrs period

The V6 still sounds pretty good and certainly one of the best sounding V6's out there. I agree there is still some way to go on depreciation on these Maser's though. How about a Merc that has lost most of its money such as a 2007 or later CL500. Not ruinous to run compared to AMG examples, cheap enough to buy, quick, comfortable and still modern enough.

How about a nice Volkswagen Golf R - You could get a 2017 MK7 Facelift with 4MOTION from a main dealer for about £28,000

Are there still any of those amazing lease deals on the Golf R around?

I'd be worried about maintenance on anything remotely exotic given that the oil won't be getting close to temperature on your very short commute.

A bicycle seems the obvious suggestion to me, or electric, which it seems to me has none of the disadvantages of the short journey.
BMW i3?
- or combine the 2 and get and eBike :)

I'd be tempted by a e39 M5 (or 540i), or the V8 M3 (similar engine). Solid cars, scoops of torque, lovely drives, and a nice contrast to what you already have.

W8 is that a phaeton engine... Good find nonetheless

No, the W8 was not used on the Phaeton - maybe you are thinking of the Bentley W12 that was. Basically the W8 is: take two VR6 engines, lop 2 cylinders of each and then smoosh them together.
I kept nearly buying one of these, but I bought the QP instead.

Really ?

The W8, W12 & W16 are all combinations of the same W4 configuration, 4 500cc cylinders in a offset V formation to make them shorter. So the W8 was 4.0, W12 is 6.0 and W16 8.0. The W8 went into the Passat. W12 in the Phaeton and Bentley and the W16 in the Veyron.

I have had two W8 Passats a saloon and estate both awesome cars, real sleepers. Super smooth and surprisingly quick and with 4WD would go anywhere especially with winter tyres. Always tempted bu another but the engine has some issues and is prone to failing. There are also expensive to run, the timing chain is at the back of the engine and if needs changing thens its engine out and the fat part of £4k for the chain, tensioners and guides.

I would have another especially if I could find a manual estate, most of which went to the NI police force

Honestly, and never thought I'd hear myself say this, but if only used for a 9 mile return commute go cycle in summer and any of the electric cars or hybrids for winter. You have the fez for summer fun.

Whilst I accept this may attract derision and other such comments ;), I took delivery in March of my new run around. Perfect for short journeys with 1.2litre 3 cylinder turbo petrol engine and 6 speed auto. Plenty of gadgets including sat nav Bluetooth etc etc.

Those DS3s are nice cars. Frankly, for a run of sod-all miles I’d buy a banger and trouser £29k. If I wanted a non-banger then the Citroen, a Fiat 500 twin-air or - for much more money - an i3.

Thanks, and without becoming a bore, since they split DS from Citroen, they are trying hard to promote it as a premium brand and it shows in the up market finish on the car, plus an improved dealership experience.
For me the reason I chose it was, in the same way as the Ghibli is different from the run of the mill 5 Series or E Class, the DS3 stands out against the Fiesta Corsa etc, and most importantly it's one of the few Auto Superminis that has a decent auto box and engine combination giving really quite nippy performance.
Oh that and the near on 20% discount!!!
