And now another one, this time a text supposedly from the Halifax claiming a new device has just been paired with my account blah blah, only problem with that one is I don't and never have had an account with Halifax, these things are really getting out of control.

You don’t have to have an account with Halifax, all they have to do is catch one in the thousands they send out that does, and who is foolIsh enough to respond.

Apparently the number one think to say to South Asians is 'Your mother will be ashamed of you doing this' - loss of face....

Yup, that's always my line. "I have a question; does your mother know that you do this kind of work?" Most get really cross, but one guy actually started crying.

I’m always a bit conflicted on these, and admit that in the past I’ve had an extended discussion about a papercut, but the individuals aren’t really to blame - they’re working to get an income, support their family etc and I’m sure they’d rather not be dealing with privileged and angry Brits.

The real bellends are whoever sets these businesses up.

I do understand it is not ideal to be mean to the people at the bottom of this process, a bit like giving the delivery guy a hard time when he just throws your parcel over the garden wall and rushes off to try to earn his 30p for the next delivery. But while I sympathise a bit with people who have to chose bad employers or even crime due to economic hardship, in this case I still think 'fork you!', and want to have a go. And I can't reach their bosses.

Maybe the noble thing is to spend one's time keeping them strung on the line for ages, on the assumption that they get some sort of survival-level base pay (as well as a successful theft bonus), and you are delaying them from actually finding a muddled widow from whom they can steal her her life savings.

whilst i agree with some of your comments, these individuals know perfectly well its wrong and they have a choice, dont quite swallow the feeding the family thing, its not always angry privileged brits that get caught as most are switched on to these scams, it's old vulnerable people that get fleeced out of their life savings, so i dont have any sympathy for the individuals or the scums that set these scams up, they can all go take a long walk off a short pier

Think we’ve all forgotten the reality of matters.

Banks pay biLlions in fines, years after the event - for trillions in profits, no-one arrested.

Yet we’re all upset about desperate individuals working for “non regulated” institutions.

I agree with you there. This is the sort of thing that would send my 82 year old mum into blind panic.

Finally, a Ponzi scheme that @Wattie approves of.

We were talking about ambulance-chasing accident claims companies that outsource their ‘client identification’ to Indian call centres. Not a scam per se, and not people losing life savings.

Please don't insult pond life ;)

For the lowest of the low this is hard to beat:

PH

that really grinds my teeth when i hear elderly vulnerable people are victims like this and if they get caught probably just a slap on the wrist, they should bring back the stocks for these low lifes, public humiliation at the very least and a load of community service

I've said for years public humiliation as a deterrent instead of something that's seen as some badge of honour!

Ah, the stocks, great times!
In Medieval times, the Stocks were a wooden structure formerly in use both on the continent of Europe and in Great Britain as a method of punishment for petty offences. The culprit sat on a wooden bench with his ankles, and sometimes his wrists or even neck, thrust through holes in movable boards.
Can imagine throwing rotten fruit at them.

Trouble is with Covid rules only 6 people could turn up at once to throw the rotten fruit.
