That article does seem well researched, but it is predicated on the use NMC i.e. rare earth materials. There are abundant earth battery chemistries which have a big potential, which would turn this on its head. Batteries are not only used in high quantities in cars. There is a phenomenal number of batteries that are already used in the telecoms sector and this is going to increase with the roll out of 5G. There are large battery arrays in use in the power network to smooth and support the grid or replace generators as regulations change. The drive to invest in and develop abundant earth battery chemistry is coming from across industry and the government policy in adding impetus to resolve the issues.

A lot of people are saying “it’ll never happen”, but plenty of engineers and scientists are saying “hold my pint”.
This might be so, but putting all your eggs in the EV basket will leave any country strategically exposed. Diversification is the key to pretty much everything, to help reduce any vulnerability at whatever level.

I’m not really sure what you mean. To what degree does using a vehicle with an electric motor increase vulnerability? We all use petrol / diesel cars right?

Note that Government are only banning Petrol & Diesel - not actually stipulating Battery type EV.

My money's on hydrogen being the longer term winner.

No need to build charging infrastructure?
No huge demand for rare earth minerals/metals etc?
No significant waste disposal issues?

Indeed, and I expect hydrogen is going to feature strongly. You could even run a V8 on it.

The battery chemistry you refer to is only the current situation, abundant earth chemistry is likely to be along well before the ban is in place.

Surely no more than the electronics that already exist in vehicles? Genuinely curious here.

Drives even more dependency on electrical power as a primary power source which would increase future vulnerability unless shielding can be developed to mitigate. But youre right the vulnerability exists today with existing designs. Question is would it be any worse...I suspect it might be.

We use electricity to pump the fuel we use, and pay for it using electronic telecoms infrastructure. We import 44% of diesel and 32% of petrol we use. There are plenty of vulnerabilities in the supply chain. Worse or better, neither seem particularly robust.

Having been to America last place I would want to go back to for me.
I can't see the French ditching their Diesels or their Classics.
Food and drink is Good and loads of space so I'm staying here.

This is a very worthwhile watch and I thoroughly recommend noting the engineers eyes light up as he sees the project returning to an audience that this time is ready for it!


So small displacement multi-cylinder and hybrid technology ready to go in 2004 but no appetite in the industry for it when the only other Hybrid out there was the Mk1 Prius!!! Now call me a cynic but isn't this everything in the Koenigsegg / F1 KERS principle way before it was called that???
