Rust Protection

Some useful pointers courtesy of DickyB...

best place to get Dinitrol is either direct from Dinitrol themselves http://www.rejel.com/rejel-store/lis...1/level/a.aspx - excellent customer service
or www.rust.co.uk - also very good

Here are some interesting views about cavity/underbody waxes:

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing...8&t=518009&i=0

Apparently the very best products come from Germany, this little snippet makes interesting reading (no I haven't got a Ford Scorpio, I just googled stuff about rust protection and came across it):

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cavitywax.htm

Hope that is of some use

Interesting read.
Not too sure the Mrs would be happy with me heating up the grease on the kitchen hob though..to 120 degreeC!

Very interesting read. I'd love a bit more detail and further evidence, maybe the actual Autobild report. Be great if there was someone in the UK providing that grease and spraying it.

I would have imagined if the German product was so wonderful, the Germans would have cornered the market, EU wide, world wide.....why not...why have they kept it "secret"...??!!

If you need to remove rust from any small parts I can highly recommend Bilt Hamber's Deox C. It comes as a powder which you dilute in warm water then immerse your rusty parts in it. After a period of time (depends on how rusty the parts are) you will be left with clean shiny bare metal that just needs rinsing and priming before any top coats are applied. It really is excellent stuff, not too expensive either.

Some say its the same as Oxalic acid which is a lot cheaper but it doesn't seem to be in my opinion. Deox C is odourless and doesn't harm your skin and is biodegradeable. I bought some Oxalic acid but when I used it, I got acid burns on my hands (should've worn gloves!), it gave off nasty fumes, didn't remove rust as well as Deox C and left a nasty residue.

Think these are more concerned with once you have a lot of rust, how to treat it and get rid.

Waxoyl, Schultz, Dinitrol and the like, deal with preventing a vulnerable area of the car. However, from reading around, it would appear this is one area that Maserati covered off quite well when they built the cars. It is a good safety measure, but luckily our cars are not old MG's or modern Mercedes that are prone to rust.

Ross,
Check under the offside rear light cluster, 4200's can get a bubble in the paintwork due to damp creeping down from the metal lip..??
Cheers

Have you been stalking me Rob! Haha. Yes, I saw many a car with that. Seems rather odd as it is such a specific spot.

No mate, but if you have a 4200 it's worth keeping an eye on it before it get's bad. I've noticed mine has a small ripple just appearing, so it will be in to my bodyshop in the new year, if not before. It's something to do with the lip on the metalwork where the seal meets the lens of the rear light, so my body man tells me. Some are bad enough to let water in to the boot..??
