One service bill I saw for a 2008 with 50k miles it was 9k!!! 2-3k a year I could handle. I wouldn't be doing much mileage 3-5k max a year.
I would recommend that you have a full and thorough Pre Purchase Inspection by a specialist so that you have a full view of what you are buying, what needs doing right away and what will need doing in the next 12-18 months (with estimated costs included in the report).
Buy the very best car you can afford from the outset. I have a GS but I understand that there are lots of GT's around so you can be choosy.
Walk-away from anything that needs brakes, pipes, discs, pads, variators not done and the dreaded rot on sub frames. The bills will be staggering for yo to meet after purchase.

Certainly is and in my opinion the subframes on the original Coupe/GS was better made than on a GT/QP.
Having changed one on a QP I wouldn't do it again by choice unless it hadn't been driven on salted winter roads up north.
Is there anyway to detect this before it becomes apparent? I understand it rusts from the inside out so I guess when you see it, it is too late?

Get it up in the air with someone who is knowledgeable looking closely around the engine mounting points and wishbone locations.
If there is considerable surface rust consider carefully.58342

For the sake of say £5k, it would be great if the subframes were made of stainless steel.
I'm no engineer, but it just seems a shame that Maserati are such charismatic cars and yet have easily avoidable potential flaws.

This is something I noticed when looking for cars, the undersides tended to look poor.
The car I bought had benefited from underbody protection. I've just had it professionally cleaned and protected again, with particular attention to the subframes which were reported to be in very good order. I also had the cover plates replaced at the same time to keep it A1.
I think this sort of maintenance is often overlooked, but it pays dividends in the future.
Where did you get it done and what did they use?
