Apparently, if you roll a GC, two big rams shoot up out of the rear headrests, presumably to protect the occupants. Good to know, although both sad and a little alarming to see.

Wow that's proper knackered. Sad sight. No doubt worse for the occupants!

I knew Mercedes have a big bar at the parcel shelf that deploys in a roll over but good to know it is there.

Wouldn't have happened in the sport, sticks to the road like glue, as shown :p

It must have happened last year, the roof should have been down since may! What a year...

They pop up even if the roof is closed. As if you roll the car, the canvas roof is hardly going to save you!

There is a video of an R129 SL rolling at high speed on a German Autobahn I think. The occupants got out with nothing more than brown pants, major mental trauma & minor injuries I understand.

The roll bar is very substantial on the R129's and the front A pillars are design to support the weight of the car and more. One of the few cars these days that was designed as a convertible from the ground up.

I used to get the roll bar on mine to deploy by driving quickly over certain roads with gradient changes - made a **** of a noise when it deployed.

Mate had a mid 90s BMW 3 series and the roll hoops deployed with some enthusiastic driving - expensive to fix as the roof was up at the time.

I had the same once on the SL60....it is a bit of a shock & massive noise agreed. Glad it is there though as looks & feels pretty substantial.
