Rise of the used car market

Much to my surprise my Alpina gets lot more attention than the 42, the bloody thing has out classed the maser somehow. It's a diesel 5 series FFS but I suppose not entirely standard with all of the wizardry from Buchloe. It is just as a PITA on parts as well which is why I don't really need two cars in my life that basically do the same thing (long distance machines).

I like the Alpine A110 and the new Lotus which is not out yet. I have never bought a new car and the "rise of the used car market" has motivated me to look at new options.

You're not wrong , I should never have bought a 4200 , heart over head , though I think the fact it takes months to sell a Maserati unless you give it away speaks volumes about why prices are static or falling.
Maybe you should never have bought that particular 4200?

I purchased my 4200 not as a financial investment, but as a car to enjoy. If it goes down I can take the hit if it goes up - bonus.

I’ve struggled to understand why these haven’t gone up in value though. Built by Ferrari, Ferrari-derived V8, good looks, decent horsepower, etc. Similar performance cars seem to have risen in prices yet these stay virtually the same.

I know if something goes drastically wrong with these you could face a big bill - but you could with other similar cars.

Is it their image? Do people just assume that something will go wrong with a Maserati and German cars are bullet-proof (no, they’re most certainly not).

I would so like a A110 as a daily, but quite a selfish car with a family, 2 seats, very limited luggage capacity.
Like I didn't buy the Yaris GR, limited rear seats and small boot.

No disrespect to the previous owner (caugh), but it was at the more budget end of the market, plus your subsequent spend on the respray didn't turn out to be the best for longativity, again carried out at the budget end. Lessons learned I guess.

The majority of the public are like sheep, and stick to what they think are bullet-proof!

It's only my wife and I, my friends never take lifts with me so we don't even need the space in the 5 series other than when we go camping a couple of times a year. Agree the luggage capacity is limited but it ticks every other box and drives with an incredible amount of character for a modern car

Funnily enough the GR has been my best car investment ever and I've never not got a smile on my face when I'm driving it , the grip and handing is simply astounding.

It all started when I was 10 , I saved up all my pocket money to buy a mamod steam traction engine , went to the shop but I hadn't got enough money for a traction engine so came home with a stationary engine which I didn't really want , roll on 45 years and history repeats itself, not enough money for a QP so I came home with a 4200 stationary engine I didn't really want.

I would love another 4200 having had two but just too much money this side of the Channel.
The only thing that concerns me is the future parts supply.
I still have a few bits and pieces in stock here in France.
For me and Ms French kids grown up the coupé is a perfect touring car.

Apart from the obvious, what's stopping you bringing in a right hander from Blighty? I guess Brexit has probably spannered that one.

I'm afraid those days are over.
I bought the Porsche in 2019 and was dead easy just the fees of getting it registered.
Bought Ms French her Fiat 500 twinair in Belgium again as easy as.
Would really like a project one like I sorted back in 2014.

@safrane ‘s old 4200 resides in Central Western France. He is considering selling. Perfect car for you @philw696 and no Brexit VAT implications.
