I’d always thought he’d had a decent war, in as. In as much as he saw action, got shot at and appears to have well respected by those who served with him. So he certainly did a few years of work. The brother in law always talks highly of him on visits to the various RAF bases he was on. I’d always wondered if he made 100 if Liz would have hand delivered his card...

Is it only me that thought he was a bit of an oaf and said many quite racist comments about Indian wiring and drunker Scots taxi drivers?

He was definitely one of the boys but some of those gaffes

There's Filipino nurses , slitty eyes , a lot of Patel's at an Indian reception , telling a 25 year old girl he'd be arrested if he undid the zip on the front of her dress
Asking a 24 year old sea cadet if the nightclub she worked at was a strip club

Even fat kids weren't exempt

You’re too fat to be an astronaut.’ (to 13-year-old Andrew Adams who told Philip he wanted to go into space. Salford, 2001).
(That one is quite funny though)

There's quite a long list

Well, I was close, but muddled.
  • Prince Philip is the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece & Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg.
    • Prince Andrew of Greece was the fourth son of King George I of Greece and Olga Constantinovna of Russia.
    • Princess Alice of Battenberg was a great grand-daughter of Queen Victoria.
      • King George I of Greece was formerly Prince William of Denmark and was selected (at the age of 17) by the Greek National Assembly and the Great Powers to replace Bavarian-born King Otto, who was deposed in October 1862.
        • (King Otto, second son of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, was described by one biographer as "neither ruthless enough to be feared, nor compassionate enough to be loved, nor competent enough to be respected")
Prince Philip and the Queen are also both great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria (who has about 800 descendants).

I read this book about his early life a while back. It’s an easy read and explains a lot:

Sad to hear of anyone dying but not to the extent they cancel Corrie for a ‘Tribute’

There, I said it…

Definitely not only you.

Some great stories in this thread and some funny ones at that, but I don’t understand why I’m supposed to be upset that an old racist guy who refused to move with the times, from a family who equally refuse to move with the times (and are currently destroying themselves due to this) has died.

The media turned the country into some 1984 level dystopian nightmare in about 1 hour, I turned in the radio (rock station) yesterday to hear the National anthem being played, followed by pre-recorded statements and lots of slow and sad songs, the BBC had merged all of their channels into some sort of simulcast semi-permanent Philip fetish where everyone wears black suits and arm bands, even billboards have turned into giant social media posts like a scene from V for Vendetta. What a sham this country is, forced mourning and not even a public holiday out of it.

The only thing to look forward to is the day the Daily Mail manages to print a headline somehow blaming his death on Megan.

Someone has died, and that’s sad, but he was 99, it’s not exactly a massive shock. RIP.

RIP Prince Phillip

RIP DMX - this has saddened me considerably. Being 34 I grew up listening to his music such a waste passing at 50 from a heart attack apparently as a result of an OD.

You missed out the bit about his philandering

Well, just seen HRH the Prince of Wales’ first interview on the Beeb 10 o’clock news.

What amazing strength. I absolutely was not customer-facing when I lost my mum one year ago, and would struggle to talk about it now. Huge respect to all of them ...

I wonder how much more the papers can find to print about him, personally I won’t be buying any more papers for the next week or so - bored already

A fantastic guy, did his job well, but many people have lost their fathers and grandads who have also done their jobs well, to be honest I have had just about enough of it. Absolutely no disrespect intended and I really mean that.
